Structural Design CAlculations

The document provides a preliminary sizing for a 50m long canal-top solar structure spanning over a canal in Teesta Canal, Jalpaiguri, India. Load calculations and a linear analysis indicate tensions of up to 660kN can be expected, requiring 4 wire ropes of 19mm diameter each with a pre-tension of 90kN per rope. A nonlinear cable analysis in SAP2000 confirms the sizing and estimates maximum deflections of 350mm for dead loads and 850mm for combined dead and wind loads. Foundations should be designed for lateral forces up to 928kN, vertical forces up to 105kN, and moments up to 2454kN.m.

BRIEF
30 September 2017 09:19

The structure is a 50m long tensile truss spanning over a canal, acting as a canal -top solar structure.

LOCATION: TEESTA CANAL, AROUND JALPAIGURI

EXPECTED TILT: 25 DEGREES.

The current scope is a preliminary study of the system for tender

Here is a sketch of the system.

Distance between the main trusses, is 10m. (10 panels per pod)
26 pods per truss, implying each pod is approx 1.8m wide. Hence panels are implied to be laid with longer side
Along pod width of 1.8m projected horizontal length.

The dimensions are preliminary.

ANCHORING END:
OPTION 1: HORIZONTAL SPLAYING OF CABLES

THIS REQUIRES ANCHORING ASSEMBLIES AT END.

MODE OF ACTION OF TENSILE TRUSS
30 September 2017 14:06

This is how the tensile truss is expected to resist loads:

THE ABOVE CONDITIONS ARE FOR STABILITY. THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY BEARING ON DEFLECTIONS.
DEFLECTIONS HAVE TO BE TREATED SEPARATELY (FE ANALYSIS) FOR ACCEPTABILITY

LOADS
30 September 2017 09:36

The main truss has actual pods running orthogonally to it.

Dead load of panels - 26 kg per 2 sq m.

0.13 kPa

DEAD LOAD of pods including panels 500 kg.

Area of a pod 10X1.8 =>
Load = 27 kg /m2 or 0.27 kPa
Load on main truss = 0.27*10 = 2.7 kN/m

WIND LOADS:
CFD study of the system is proposed by client to be considered as a basis for wind loads
WINDSPEED 200 kmph
The following describes the output of the wind loading

ANALYSIS-LINEAR SINGLE 50M DUMMY BEAM ELEMENT
30 September 2017 11:38

The following load combinations are to be used

As per LSD IS 800
0.9DL + 1.6*WIND
1.5DL + 1.5*WIND
FOR DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL STEEL.
For design of wire rope, a plain FOS of 2 is applied on expected tension.

2 ANALYSES ARE DONE:

LINEAR ANALYSIS OF A DUMMY BEAM
1) SIMPLE LINEAR ANALYSIS OF A LINE TO GET MOMENTS AND SHEARS ACROSS THE LENGTH FOR THE GIVEN
LOADING. The line was a dummy I beam and was loaded with gravity load of 27kN/m and wind point loads as per
analysis pod point loads by RGBSI given previously.

BengalTender Page 7
As per the above, expected tension in rope at centre, for 4 M DEPTH OF TRUSS T = M/lever arm
DEAD LOADS TENSION/COMPRESSION = 840 / 4 = 210 kN (LEVER ARM IS 4M)
WIND LOADS TENSION/COMPRESSION = 2041 / 4 = 510.25 Kn (LEVER ARM IS 4M)

MAX TENSION/COMPRESSION = DL - WIND = 300 kN as wind is upwards as per CFD analysis.

*This is an important assumption as loads subtract out.

This is the tension and compression in a normal truss system at this depth of truss. But this is a pre-
tensioned Structure which cannot admit compression.

Therefore, pretension to be 1.2*MAX COMPRESSION= 1.2*300=360 kN

Expected full-tension under PRETENSION+WIND+DEAD = 360 + 300 = 660 kN

Expected full-tension of 4 wire ropes under PRETENSION + DEAD = 360 + 210 = 570 kN
Note how both cases have similar values - the ultimate case is quite near the operational case.

Assuming 4 Ropes, to be splayed later in 2-2, per rope tension in the DL+WIND condition= 300/ 4=75
kN .
x
So as per previous discussion, for a no-compression system, then
ROPE MAX TENSION AFTER PRETENSION = 75 + 90=165 kN
PRETENSIONING FORCE = 1.2*75=90 kN
ROPE MAX CAPACITY AT FOS OF 2 = 330 kN

The nearest match is 19 mm dia in 1x37 construction. Breaking strength = 336 kN

=> 4-19 mm dia ropes

As per above assumption, 4 wire ropes of dia 19 used for top and bottom strands.
Ast = 211*4=844 mm2
Pretension force per wire rope 90kN

Assumed shear force required tension demands are lesser than the midspan ones.

The above simplistic analysis is for equilibrium and stability. It makes no provisions for
Deflection acceptability.

ANALYSIS-NONLINEAR CABLE ON SAP2000
30 September 2017 12:35

With the previous simplistic analysis, a 2D truss is modelled in SAP2000 over a length of 50m and six supports.
Pretensioning Target force is 90*4=360 kN
SAP2000 CABLE ELEMENTS ARE USED FOR ANALYSIS
The following is a screenshot of the model. NONLINEAR P-DELTA AND LARGE DEFLECTION ANALYSIS IS USED

THE FOLLOWING LOAD PATTERNS ARE DEFINED

DEAD: HAS THE DEAD LOAD OF 2.7kN/m ON THE TOP CHORD
WIND : HAS THE POINT LOADS AS PER CFD ANALYSIS
PRETENSION: PRETENSIONS THE CHORDS TO 360kN as per earlier
Linear analysis

THE DEAD CASE STARTS FIRST

PRETENSION STARTS FROM END OF DEAD. LABELLED PRETENSION + DEAD
WIND STARTS FROM END OF PRETENSION. THIS LOAD CASE IS LABELLED
DEAD + PRETENSION + WIND

A symmetric section should be used, in final design.

CONCLUSION
30 September 2017 12:47

1) The wire rope can be done in 4 strands of 19 dia

2) Pre-tension is 75 kN per wire rope. Basis is to have a 1.2 FoS over the rope going Limp in wind
loads. This implies a total pre-tension of 360kN top and bottom chord.
3) The vertical posts can be done in 200CS85X2 Wt 0.062667kN/m
4) Expected deformations in DEAD are 350mm and DEAD + WIND are 850mm
5) Foundation forces are quite significant. Any savings in superstructure can be offsetted
by the costs of providing foundations for such large lateral forces. Some innovation
might be required here. Foundation forces given here.
DEAD DEAD + WIND
LATERAL FORCE 849 kN 928 kN
6)
VERTICAL FORCE 84 kN (down) 105 kN(up)
