PROPOSAL

HYDROPONIC
TIARA VERITAS LEARNING DAY

COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING

STUDENT LIFE DEPARTMENT
UNIVERSITAS PELITA HARAPAN
KARAWACI
2018
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Background:
Planting with soil has always been the conventional way of growing fruits and
vegetables. However, some plants cannot grow due to harsh environments such as
winter. Therefore, the idea of hydroponics came into life. Hydroponics is the
process of growing and cultivating plants without the use soil but rather with water
nutrients. Because of this, less land area are needed to cultivate plants instead of
hectares of soil which produces less of a result when compared to hydroponic
farming. Furthermore, the process of soil farming uses fertilizers which could seep
into bodies of water, causing harm to the ecosystem within it. Our resources on this
planet are limited making Hydroponic farming an ideal method of farming as it
optimizes the use of resources, while also limiting harm towards the environment
because as the dominant species, we are responsible in preserving life on earth.

1. Philosophy of Science and Stewardship (Christian perspective)

The key task of philosophy of Science and Stewardship is to evaluate the methods
of enquiry used in the task of science as well as to understand and master the
approach used in science to help scientist to break the mystery of science.
Philosophers of science often ask themselves to questions such as what is a law of
nature? Are there any in a non-physical science like biology or psychology?
Another one is what kind of data can be used to distinguish between real causes
and accidental regularities? These questions might be easy to answer in the eyes of
human beings. However, it is actually quite difficult to answer them satisfactorily.
Though there had been many answers as well as opinions, philosophy of science
has agreed to one thing, there is no simple way to define science. As for
stewardship, it is about relationship. It includes our relationship with time, talents,
as well as our relationship to earth. Most importantly, it is our relationship with
God. God gave us all the blessings. He was the one who made everything possible
and had given everything to us in life. Food, water, air, sunlight are blessings from
God and these blessings are not to be wasted or thrown. Soil for example is also a
blessing from God. We do not throw or waste them as they are used wisely in our
daily lives and that is one of the reasons why hydroponics are created. By the help
of science and stewardship, we, human beings uses hydroponics nowadays to
reduce the use of soil and to reduce the harming of soil in which human beings
usually waste or destroy by stepping on them for example. Hydroponics uses
water, minerals, sunlight and other small ingredients used for plants to grow. The
only different with regular plants is that hydroponics do not use soil while the
plants grow. With hydroponic, philosophy of science and stewardship are shown.
The creation of hydroponics is through the help of science and the rejection of
harming soils is through the help of the stewardship. This is an example of where
philosophy of science and stewardship is connected and how it can help us, human
beings, save the world.

2. General Ecology, Ecological Intelligence, and Amygdala Function

Ecology, by definition, is a branch of biology that focuses on organisms and its
physical surroundings. Thus, ecological intelligence means the capability of
adapting to an ecology. Hydroponics is a way of growing plants without any soil
and that means less space to be used and less pests. In this case, hydroponics
encourage people to grow plants in little spaces and not having to use pesticide.
Pesticides are often overused and resulted in excess chemical flowing in the river.
Because of this, river is contaminated by harmful chemicals than can harm the
ecology of the river. For example, the fishes might be contaminated and poisoned.
Another scenario might be, the fish was caught by a local fisherman and was sold
to the public. That can cause diseases for the person who will eat the fish.
Therefore, hydroponics can be considered as ecologically intelligent. It minimizes
the disruption of ecology because it does not include any organism that can harm
the environment.

3. Environmental Cause and Sustainability Problems

There are large amount of environmental problems nowadays because many
companies neglect the consequences of their actions. One of the example might be
the pharmaceutical company that is located in India, it produces antibiotics for the
mass-market. The company dumped their toxic chemicals into the river nearby
their factory and in that river, many pathogens of the antibiotics collide with the
bacteria inside the river resulting in the creation of a super-bugs. When people get
this disease, using a conventional antibiotics do not work anymore because the
bacteria has develop a resistance towards most antibiotics products. This is one of
the environmental problems in the world and there are many more.
Hydroponics is a way of helping to reduce and prevent the making of
environmental problems. It uses less space means that less forest are cut down for
the sake of farmland. Not only that, hydroponics only uses 10 percent of the water
that are needed for conventional farming. Thus, saving more water is beneficial to
the society. Moreover, hydroponics has no need of pesticides that control pest
insects in conventional farming. This reduces the spray of pesticides that can cause
a great damage do the environment.

4. Environmental Chemistry
Environmental chemistry is the study of the chemical and biochemical interactions
that occur within a natural setting. This branch of chemistry explores the different
naturally occurring phenomenon(s) such as photosynthesis at the molecular level.

In agriculture, most plants require the following conditions that are essential in
order for them to grow; they require water, an appropriate climate (temperature),
light energy and nutrients (from Soil) however these requirements vary among the
different plants. Water is used for the transport of nutrients that are within the soil
to nourish the plant tissues and it is essential in the process of photosynthesis in
converting carbon dioxide to the plant’s food source in the form of a sugar using
light energy with oxygen as its byproduct. (Equation for photosynthesis: 6CO2 +
6H2O + light energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2.)

The use of Hydroponic farming can be considered as a more efficient/superior

method of farming as the two essential requirements to a plants growth; Water and
Nutrients are merged and removing the need to search for fertile soil. This is
because the essential nutrients; nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are mixed into
the water in a controlled way to ensure maximum result and efficiency.

5. Hazardous and Toxic Materials

Hazardous or Toxic waste are substances that are a threat to human health and the
environment due to their chemical nature, substances such as corrosive
compounds, having the potential to damage infrastructure and soil.
In conventional farming, the process of growing and cultivating plants requires the
use of fertilizers as these substances contains essential plant nutrients such as
nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are elements that are not present
naturally in soil. However the use fertilizers has a disadvantage as these substances
in excess would seep into the soil and eventually come into contact with bodies of
water such as underground water reservoirs or flowing rivers and lakes. These
elements would then contaminate these bodies and water leaving them either not fit
for human consumption or becoming toxic to aquatic life.

Through the use of hypophonic farming, it eliminates the use of fertilizers as the
essential nutrients required by plants are administered through the water source
that the plants are grown on, reducing the risk of harm to living things around
them.

B. The Purpose of the Project Towards the Community and Group:

The main purpose of this project is to educate the youth on the process of growing
and cultivating plants through the use of hydroponics, giving detailed steps, a
balanced review of the overall process and the future potential that the hydroponics
hold. Our target audience are kindergarten students aged 4 to 7, therefore our goal
is to communicate the basic ideas of hydroponics while providing a light and fun
interactive learning experience for the students through the use of easily
understandable analogies and colorful infographics.

Details of Rundown:
08.45 - 09.15: During hydroponics seminar, we try to explain on how plants
normally grow which use soil, water and sunlight. Next, we explain about
hydroponics as simple as possible by telling the kids that there are only two things
necessary which are sunlight and water. Afterwards, we play a simple game of
questions and answers where we showed them pictures of something and let them
guess it. The winners are awarded with coloring books.

09.15- 09.50: We prepared a simple implementation for the kids because they are
still very young. The things that we prepared for our Hydroponics implementation
are bottles that will shape as a container and a hanger for the small pot. Next, the
small pot, special cotton, flannel paper as means of transportation of water to the
plant. All of those except the plastic water bottles are bought in Agrophoria at
Alam Sutra which specializes in Hydroponic Farming. We handled 12 kids, thus
we prepared 12 sets of water bottles and etc. Everyone got one and we asked them
to write their names on the bottle so they can observe theirs when the plants grow.
Then, we ask them to construct the pot in the manners that we taught them.
