Assignment II Max. Marks: 05

This document outlines an assignment for a course on electric drives and control. It contains 5 questions related to three-phase rectifiers supplying separately excited DC motors and armature resistance-based starting systems. Students are instructed to submit handwritten work with their name and registration number as a single PDF file via Google Classroom. They are also told to keep their assignments original to receive maximum marks.

Assignment II Max.

Marks : 05

• The assignment has to be hand written with the name and registration number on
each page. The scanned copy as a single PDF has to be submitted online in the Google
Classroom.

1. With neat circuit diagrams and waveforms, explain the operation of a three-phase full
controlled rectifier fed separately excited dc motor. Also, derive the expressions for
average output voltage and speed-torque relation.

2. With neat circuit diagrams and waveforms, explain the operation of a three-phase half
controlled rectifier fed separately excited dc motor. Also, derive the expressions for
average output voltage and speed-torque relation.

3. Derive a generalized expression for determining the value of r1 , r2 .... rm in the armature
resistance-based starting setup resulting in the shown evolution of armature current and
speed.

4. A 10 kW, 220 V, 1490 rpm, separately excited dc motor has Ra = 0.3Ω, a brush drop of
2 V, and a rated current of 50 A. Design a starter system with three resistors yielding
in Iamax = 100 A and Iamin = 60 A.

5. For Q4, determine the value of t1 , t2 and t3 .

Important: Keep your assignment as unique (original) as possible for

fetching maximum marks.
