Assignment For Research Methods

This document provides instructions for a research methods assignment for an MSc program in Electrical Power and Communication Engineering. It includes 4 sections with multiple questions to test students' understanding of research methodology. Section A asks students to formulate a research problem and propose a methodology. It also asks questions about sampling procedures, experimental design, and statistical analysis using ANOVA and regression. Students are instructed to attempt all questions in the assignment.

Research Methods Assignment

December 2017
Time : .. hours

Candidates should attempt all questions in Section A and all Questions from Section B.
Marks will be allocated as indicated.

SECTION A (40 marks)

Candidates may attempt ALL questions being careful to number them A1 to A4.

A1. Formulate a research problem or use the one from your first assignment and propose
the methodology and analysis that you could perform.

A2. In survey methodology discuss the best sampling procedure that you can use for the
following situations:
(a) a survey to find out how people feel about the services offered by the ZESA, [7]
(b) a survey to determine how people in Mbare feel about the cellphone network
reception. [7]
(c) a small survey to determine the effect of a new base station in the neighbourhood
of small residential area. [7]
(d) Design a very short questionnaire for any one of these studies. [10]

A3. Four different machines M1 , M2 , M3 , and M4 are to be consider ed in the assembling

of a particular product. It is decided that six different operators are to be used in a
randomized block experiment to compare the machines. The machines are assigned in
a random order to each operator. The operation of machines requires a certain amount
of dexterity, and it is anticipated that there will be a difference among the operators
in the speed with which they operate the machines. The following times, in seconds,
were recorded for assembling he given product:

Operator
M achine 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 42.5 39.3 39.6 39.9 42.9 43.6
2 39.8 40.1 40.5 42.3 42.5 43.1
3 40.2 40.5 41.3 43.4 44.9 45.1
4 41.3 42.2 43.5 44.2 45.9 42.3

(a) Test the hypothesis at α = 0.05 level of significance that the machines perform
at the same speed. Calculate both manually and using MINITAB. Include all the
hypotheses tested. [7,5]
(b) Test whether the operators have an effect on the machine performance at α = 0.05.
Use both manual calculations MINITAB or SPSS 7,5
(c) Intepret and explain the results clearly and if one of the effects is not significant
remove it from the model and obtain fresh results. [6]

A4. An experiment was conducted to determine if the animal weight can be predicted after
a given period of time on the basis of the initial weight of the animal and the amount
of feed that was eaten. Data is in kgs.

F inal initial F eed

weight weight Eaten
y x1 x2
95 42 272
77 33 226
80 33 259
100 45 292
97 39 311
70 36 183
50 32 173
80 41 236
92 40 230
84 38 235

(a) Fit a multiple linear regression equation y = β0 + β1 x1 + β2 x2 + using either

MINITAB or SPSS. [8]
(b) Test for the significance of the regression and predict the final weight of an animal
whose initial weight is 35kg and has eaten 250kgs. [3,3]
