SKMP3712 - Design For Assembly (DfA) Assignment PDF

This document outlines an assignment for a Design for Assembly (DfA) course. The objectives are to analyze and critique the assembly efficiency of an original product design, redesign parts for improved assembly, and quantify the benefits. Students are instructed to select a product with 20-30 parts, disassemble it, and analyze each part's assembly characteristics. They should estimate assembly time, calculate design efficiency, redesign the product for better assembly, and compare the original and new designs in a formal report. The report should include sections on the original design analysis, redesign description and analysis, and comparison/conclusions.

SKMP3712 : Design for Assembly (DfA) Assignment

Objectives:

The objectives of this assignment are to:

i. Analyze the design for assembly efficiency,

ii. Critique the design from an assembly point of view,
iii. Redesign the part for improved assembly operations,
iv. Quantify the benefits of the re-designed part.

Instructions:

Select a suitable product (with the total no. of parts should be more than 20 but less
than 30 items). Disassemble the product and count the total no. of parts. By using
the Boothroyd-Dewhurst DfA Methodology General Guidelines for Manual Assembly,
critique each part of design from an assembly point of view. Classify each part for
manual handling and for insertion/fastening. Estimate the assembly time for this
product (assuming complete manual assembly). Identify the minimum number of
theoretical parts in the design. Calculate the assemblability design efficiency (ADE) of
the original design.

Then, modify the old design to improve the assembly efficiency. Repeat the
calculations of efficiency, classifications and assembly time for the new design to show
how your design is in improvement.

Deliverables:

A formal report including the following:

1. Introduction & Objective (5%)

2. Product to be studied & number of parts in the original design (5%)
3. Written critique of each part (10%)
4. Classification of each part (manual handling and insertion/fastening) (10%)
5. Estimated assembly time (5%)
6. Design efficiency of the original design (5%)
7. Redesign of the product (description, justification and sketches - no need for
detailed dimensioned drawings) (20%)
8. Classification of each part (manual handling and insertion/fastening) for the
new design (10%)
9. Estimated assembly time for the new design (5%)
10. Design efficiency of the new design (5%)
11. Discussion - Comparison of the new with the old designs (quantitative and
qualitative) (10%)
12. Conclusions (5%)
13. References & Appendices (5%)
The report should be submitted before or on Friday, 1 November 2013 (before
12.00 pm).

Grading:

i. Items 1 - 3 : 20%
ii. Items 4 - 6 : 20%
iii. Item 7 : 20%
iv. Items 8 - 10 : 20%
v. Items 11 - 13 : 20%
vi. Report (organization, presentation, style, figures, etc.) : Bonus 5%
