Grade: 7 Lesson Title: The War of 1812 Lesson Duration (mins):48

Overview of lesson:

The students will finish off learning about the Loyalists at the beginning of the lesson. The rest of the lesson will
explore the reasons for the War of 1812 and the role of Tecumseh in the war. Students will pair together to fill in
the bio of Tecumseh in their notes before the end of class.

 What enticed Britain to go to war with the United States?

Lesson Procedures

Introduction (2 min.):
 Focus the class by asking connecting questions from the last lesson:
- Who are the Loyalists?
- Who was Rose Fortune?
- Why did the Loyalists seek shelter in Canada?

Body (44 min.):


 Open the Powerpoint to slide 18.
 The students will fill in the next 5 definitions (United
Empire Loyalists, traitor, refugee, discrimination,
immigrant)
 Some Loyalists moved to Quebec instead of Nova Scotia Assessments
 Sir Frederick Halimand traded with the Anishinabe for Formative:
land Completion of the Tecumseh biography
 Thayendenegea demanded for land for his people.
 Loyalists that landed in Quebec spoke English, but the
majority of the colony spoke French.
 The Constitutional Act divided Quebec into upper and
lower Canada.
 The British and the United States couldn’t get along
 Britain was at war with France, which means the
Americans couldn’t trade with the French
 The British KIDNAPPED American sailors to serve in
the British navy.
 The British supported the First Nations in the struggle for
land.
 Some Americans wanted to take over British colonies.

 Fill in Tecumseh’s bio in your notes.

over it.
