This document is made for my (Manjunath M Gaddi) understanding and if anything is wrong please
give me the opportunity to correct the information by informing me what is wrong and what is the
right information.
As per my understand, Time is the basic currency of Astrology and unless one’s understanding of the
measurement of time is correct, the astrological analysis made be one may not be accurate, which
implies that the astrological analysis is more or less wasted.
I have just summarised the various definitions of time as described in the document released by
the Dharmic Scriptures team.
I’m assuming 1 Brahma Year has 360 Kalpas, as it is not mentioned in the content in Padma Purana
Time as Described in Puranas

Each 'Manvantar' is named after a Manu and is equivalent to little more than 71 Chaturyugas. It also
has its own Indra, Saptarishis and other deities.
This is the period after which a Brahma's day is over and a deluge (as causal dissolution (Naimittik
Pralay) (markandeya purana)) takes place when all the three worlds becomes devoid of life due to
unbearable heat.
Lord Brahma then takes rest for the same period (4,29,40,80,000 yrs) which is his night.
(Can any one explain this discrepancy as per calculations 1 Brahma day is 4,32,00,00,000 where as
its given in the Puranas document that the Brahma day and night have same human years and that is
4,29,40,80,000)
After the night is over, Lord Brahma again commences his creation. So, this process continues for the
whole period of Brahma's life span, i.e. 100 yrs.
The Following table tries to bring parity between the current 24 hour, minute and second time
measurement with the one described in Padma Purana. This is my analysis
Seconds Minutes
1 Nimesh 0.21
1 Kashtha 3.2
1 Kala 96 1.6
1 Muhurtha 2880 48
1 Ahoratra 86400
For sake of repetition, I have put “Until Kalpa, all the metrics stay the same as in Padma Purana”. The
corresponding Purana doesn’t say “Until Kalpa, all the metrics stay the same as in Padma Purana “
