Writing Problem 3: Practice “Explore” PT

For this assignment, you will write 600 words about a “computing innovation”—you know the
routine by now…

Please organize your assignment as follows:

2a. Describe your computing innovation’s intended purpose and function. (100 words max)

2c. Explain at least one beneficial effect and at least one harmful effect the computing innovation
has had, or has the potential to have, on society, economy, or culture. (250 words max)

2d. Using specific details, describe:

• The data your innovation uses;
• How the innovation consumes (as input), produces (as output), and/or transforms data;
and
• At least one data storage concern, data privacy concern, or data security concern directly
related to the computing innovation.
(250 words max)

2e. Provide at list of at least three sources. (Note that you must also include in-text citations!)

This will be a 15-point major grade. You will receive 1.5 points for each of the following:
• Identifying the intended purpose and function of your computing innovation.
• Identifying (at least) one beneficial effect of the computing innovation.
• Identifying (at least) one potentially harmful effect of the computing innovation.
• Relating one of the above effects to society, economy, or culture (i.e., answering the
question of “why should I [the reader] care?”).
• Identifying the data the innovation uses and how it consumers, produces, and/or
transforms the data.
• Identifying (at least) one data storage, data privacy, or data security concern.
• Citing at least three sources, including in-text citations.

(Simple arithmetic suggests this adds up to 10.5 points, and you thus start with a 4.5/15.)

Note that failure to include three in-text citations will result in a penalty of three points
rather than 1.5.

Please label each section as outlined above (2a, 2c, 2d, 2e).

This assignment is due on Thursday, April 9 at 11:59 p.m. EDT, but you can have an
automatic extension to Monday, April 13 at 11:59 p.m. Please submit it as a turn-in on
Schoology (Word file or PDF).
