Release Notes page 14 (of 25) [HiPath Wireless Access Points Software V1R3]
3.5 New Features in V1R3.2.6 (GP2) Release

• ‘A’ radio support

• Enhanced Rate Control
• Multi-rate Retries
• Version Number Changes - The format of the version is changed to conform to the new standard:
VMRm.p.q, where M is a major revision, m is a minor revision, and p and q are patch and build
numbers respectively.
• Reset button – Support for reset button available on ROHS6 platform is implemented in this
release. If button is pressed for less then 4 seconds box will reset. If it is pressed for more then 4
seconds box will first set factory defaults and then reset.
• Turbo Voice
• Changes to the DSCP/AC mapping

3.5.1 ‘A’ Radio Support

Support for ‘a’radio has been implemented in release V1R3.2.6. For configuration details please refer to the
User Guide.

Note that with the inclusion of DFS feature on the ‘a’ radio feature DFS capability is enabled as a mechanism
for radar detection and avoidance. While AP is in radar scan mode if user tries to change configuration on
“wireless basic” or “advanced 802.11a” radio pages, configuration changes will be rejected with following
error message presented on the screen: “Channel configuration in progress. Users are temporarily not
allowed to modify the configuration on this page.”

Moreover, the "save"/ “factory defaults" button will be hashed out. If the user is changing the channel and
selects channel 52 or above the AP will then try to check for radar interference. In that case, it will take ~1
minute to configure the channel. During this time if the user refreshes the page, the message will still show
up. After ~1 minute, if radar is not present on the selected channel, the "save"/ "factory defaults" button will
be unhashed and message is gone when user refreshes again. Otherwise the AP will be rebooted. After it
boots up again, AP is in auto channel select mode for the ‘a’ radio. During this time, the “wireless basic”
page and the “advanced 802.11a” page will again display this message. After a channel has been
automatically selected, the web page will go back to normal operation again.

3.5.2 Enhanced Rate Control

This feature provides a way to improve roaming behavior of the clients that do not perform background
scanning. It is interesting to note that most of the currently available clients (laptops, PDA’s) behave this
way. Such clients, would start scanning for a new access point only when the connection with the current
access point degrades so much that there is no actual connectivity even with the minimum rate (1Mbps for
11b/g or 6Mbps for 11a), hence the epithet “sticky”. A “sticky” client may stay associated with a remote AP at
the minimum rate even if it is brought centimeters close to another fully operational AP. This affects the
performance not only for that client but also for other clients because of the poor use of the shared wireless
bandwidth.

The solution is to allow the user to select the minimum, maximum and operational allowed rates. For
configuration details please refer to the user guide.

Release Notes page 15 (of 25) [HiPath Wireless Access Points Software V1R3]
3.5.3 Multi-rate Retries
Five drop-down list boxes each are added to the “Advanced 802.11b/g” and “Advanced 802.11a” screens.
The names and defaults of these boxes are shown in the following table (in order).

Name Values (in order) Default

3.5.4 Turbo Voice

When any of the QoS modes is enabled, a check-box called Turbo Voice is allowed. If the Turbo Voice is
enabled, all the downlink traffic that is classified to the Voice (VO) AC is transmitted by the AP via a queue
called Turbo Voice (TVO) instead of the normal Voice (VO) queue. The TVO queue is specially tailored in
terms of contention parameters and number of retries to maximize voice quality and voice capacity.

3.5.5 Changes to DSCP/AC Mapping

In GP2 release DSCP to UP Mapping has been more detailed to take into account all 6 bits of DSCP, i.e. all
64 DSCP values:

3.6 New features in R1.0

Release 1.0 is the first release for HiPath Wireless Standalone AP. Below are listed main features:

• WMM Support
• Clustering and SIAPP Support
• Restore to Factory Defaults
• Web User Interface

3.6.1 WMM Support

The HiPath Wireless Standalone AP implements the following WMM features:
• WMM priority and pre-WMM priority based on EDCA with four priority levels - Access Categories
(AC’s). WMM priority is based on the 802.11e/WMM standard and provides downlink priority for
WMM compatible clients using wireless frames with the new QoS format. Pre- WMM priority
provides downlink priority for pre-WMM clients using wireless frames with the legacy format. Both
WMM and pre-WMM priorities use the DSCP/TOS to AC mapping descried below and can be
enabled/disabled separately. Pre-WMM priority can be safely used to support legacy voice clients
like Spectralink in parallel with WMM clients like WL2.

• Mapping of DSCP/TOS bits into 802.1D User Priority (UP) and WMM AC for the downlink packets.

Release Notes page 17 (of 25) [HiPath Wireless Access Points Software V1R3]
• Separate detection and handling of Spectralink voice traffic is implemented. This because
Spectralink does not use DSCP tags compatible with the table above. The traffic shall be detected
by matching the IP Protocol filed in the IP header with the Spectralink specific code 0x77. The traffic
shall be assigned UP=7 and shall be assigned to the VO AC.

• The four queues should implement the default contention parameters as defined by the WiFi WMM
standard. For reference, the parameters are listed below.

TI Power Save
The HiPath Wireless Standalone AP supports the TI-modified legacy power-save mode in which the
client is allowed to use PS-Poll multiple times and at any time between DTIM beacons.

3.6.2 Clustering and SIAPP Support

The Siemens inter access point protocol (SIAPP) is a protocol somehow similar to the Inter AP
Protocol (IAPP) defined in the IEEE 802.11f Recommended Practice. The SIAPP has two main
functions:
• Cluster management = creation and maintenance of the roaming cluster, i.e. of the group of AP’s
within which the handover of mobile clients is supported. This function is completely new, does not
exist in IAPP.
• Handover support = ensuring fast handover of mobile clients within the roaming cluster. This SIAPP
function overlaps with the IAPP scope but it is very different being tailored to the HiPath Wireless
Standalone AP specifics.

Cluster management
The cluster management (creation and maintenance of the roaming cluster) in SIAPP is used to
build cluster information in each AP and to provision (limit) the maximum number of AP’s in a cluster
to 5. In the HiPath Wireless Standalone AP release 1.0, all AP’s in the same roaming cluster must
be on the same subnet. The cluster name is the SSID. Multiple clusters can coexist on same subnet
provided that they use different names, i.e. serve different SSID’s. In a roaming cluster, one AP is
master and the others are slaves. A slave is considered registered (i.e. member of the cluster) if it is
listed by the master in its periodic multicast SIAPP update message. A slave is considered un-
registered if there is no master listing it in the SIAPP update message.

Handover support
The SIAPP handover management shares some principles with IAPP but is very different in the
following aspects:
• Radius authentication is not used in HiPath Wireless Standalone AP release 1.0

Release Notes page 18 (of 25) [HiPath Wireless Access Points Software V1R3]
• The SIAPP does not build the roaming cache because it has the more powerful cluster information.
Hence, the SIAPP does not implement equivalents of the IAPP-CACHE primitives and packets.
• Pro-active keying (also called opportunistic keying) is not implemented. Hence, there is and there
will be no context transfer in the 802.11f sense (passing master key from one AP to another).
• The SIAPP uses only UDP.

Multicast versus broadcast

In order to provide for future compatibility, the HiPath Wireless Standalone AP SIAPP doesn’t use
broadcasts. The HiPath Wireless Standalone AP SIAPP uses multicasts because they can be
configured to propagate across subnets. HiPath Wireless Standalone AP v1.0 doesn’t implement
IGMP. Without IGMP, the L3 switches will block multicasts while L2 switches must treat the
multicasts as broadcasts. It is understood that some L2 switches may implement IGMP snooping
and that, if this feature is not properly configured, it can block the SIAPP multicasts.

SIAPP addresses
The HiPath Wireless Standalone AP SIAPP uses the same MAC, IP and port addresses as IAPP but
different version number.

Parameter SIAPP IEEE IAPP CISCO IAPP

SIAPP_MCAST_IP 224.0.1.178 224.0.1.178 224.0.1.76

3.6.3 Restore to Factory Defaults

The AP boot-up sequence is modified to include a VULNERABLE_TIME interval. If the user
interrupts the AP power during the VULNERABLE_TIME interval, the next time the AP reboots it
includes also a RANDOM_DELAY interval before the VULNERABLE_TIME interval. The two
intervals are signaled to the user by flashing LED’s in a special way as described in 8.4. If the user
interrupts the AP power for 3 consecutive times during the VULNERABLE_TIME interval, the next
time the AP reboots, it will restore its factory defaults including the user passwords and the default IP
settings, etc. The restore to factory defaults event will not erase the non-volatile log which will record
the event appropriately.

The requirements for the RANDOM_DELAY and for three consecutive reboots during the
VULNERABLE_TIME are to reduce the chance that random power failures could bring the AP to
default settings. The RANDOM_DELAY should be calculated as:

RANDOM_DELAY = RANDOM_NUMBER x VULNERABLE_TIME

Parameter Value
VULNERABLE_TIME 2s
RANDOM_NUMBER 1…4

3.7 LED Control
The LED control strategy for HiPath Wireless Standalone AP Rel 1.0 is outlined in the following
table. The description below assumes the software uses a timer and two phases to simulate LED
“blinking” on all three LED’s. A LED status of “X/Y” in the description below means that the LED is
colored “X” during the phase one and colored “Y” during the phase two, i.e. blinking “X/Y”. A LED
status of “X” means that the LED is solid-colored “X”. The following color abbreviations are used:
• R = red
• G = green
• O = orange (combination of green and red)
• N = none = LED turned off

LED Status
AP Status
Left Centre Right
N N N Powered-off
N G N Power-on self test (POST)
N R N Failure during POST
Random delay (state showed only after a vulnerable
G N G
reset)
Vulnerable period (AP resets to factory default if power-
G/N N/G G/N
down for 3 consecutive times during this state)
N O/G N Attempting to obtain IP address via DSCP
N N/G N Got IP address, attempting to join the cluster
(1) (2)
G G G Member of cluster, radios enabled per user settings

Notes:
1. G if 802.11b/g radio enabled, N otherwise
2. G if 802.11a radio enabled, N otherwise

In addition, the following LED pattern is used to notify the operator that the factory configuration is
restored. VALNERABLE_TIME is 2 seconds. Pattern is repeated twice:

Led Pattern: G-- for VULNERABLE_TIME/4

Led Pattern: -G- for VULNERABLE_TIME/4
Led Pattern: --G for VULNERABLE_TIME/4
Led Pattern: --- for VULNERABLE_TIME/4
