Final Report Comparison of Connecting Rod
Final Report Comparison of Connecting Rod
Abstract
A connecting rod is basically connecting the piston to the crankshaft while transmitting
the power of combustion from the combustion chamber to rotate the crankshaft. It may be made
of alloy steel or other alloys. This paper aims at designing the connecting rod with standard
dimensions. This paper also analysis stress, strain, factor of safety, static analysis, Thermal
analysis while taking into consideration the difference in mass of product.
Materials
There are different materials used for the manufacturing of connecting rod and these are
given below:
Alloy steel
Titanium alloys
Cast iron
Medium carbon steel
Plain carbon steel
Selected materials
Out of these materials I select the two materials for the manufacturing of connecting rod
which are given below:
Alloy steel
Titanium alloys

Cost analysis
Materials Estimated cost per part
Alloy steel 13.79 USD
Titanium alloys 17.85 USD
Conclusion
From the above work it is clear that steel alloy is the best for manufacturing of
connecting rod. As it has the best Factor of Safety with regard to its weight and minimum
deformation and one of the most important things is cost.
