Meet St. Patrick

Saint Patrick's Day (March 17th), is an Irish holiday honoring Saint Patrick, the missionary priest who
converted the Irish people to Christianity in the A.D. 400's.

Saint Patrick was not actually Irish. History says that he was born around 373 A.D. in either
Scotland or in Britain. His real name is believed to be Maewyn Succat . He did not change his name to
Patrick, or Patricus, until after he became a Catholic priest.
He was kidnapped at the age of 16 by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He was a prisoner for
about 6 years. They made him work as worked as a shepherd. He had a vision from God that he should
escape and help others. He could find a getaway ship and went to France, where he became a priest.

When he was about 60 years old, St. Patrick traveled to Ireland to spread the Christian word. He built
many churches and helped many people.

Legend has it that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland -- that they all went into the sea and
drowned.

Learn about Rainbows

A rainbow appears when sunlight passes through bits of water in the air. The white light is broken up into
many colors. Use the pretend name Roy G. Biv as a handy way to remember the colors of the rainbow in
the right order -- Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Now you may not see all of these
colors in a rainbow, but they'll usually be in order with red at the top and violet at the bottom, and the
other colors in the middle. This is because of the way sunlight is reflected by raindrops. The more
raindrops, the bigger the rainbow and the more colors! Sometimes, you might see a paler, second
rainbow next to the first -- this one will have the colors in reverse order. You can't reach the edge of a
rainbow for the same reason you can't walk under one and look at it from the other side. This is because
rainbows are an optical illusion -- the sun must always be at your back in order to see one. No two
people ever see the same rainbow!

Symbols of the Holidays

Leprechauns are a make-believe group of tiny people who are supposed to

live in Ireland and posses magical powers. They are said to be cranky and
very tricky. Leprechauns are also called "Little People." Leprechauns
originated in Celtic folklore but are now associated with St. Patrick's Day.

Leprechauns wear green clothes and hats. They are often seen smoking a
pipe. They carry a long stick called a shillelagh.

The Shamrock is a symbol of St. Patrick's Day. The shamrock is a flowering

plant that has three leaflets. It is a type of clover.
