Reflection

The student teacher felt their unit on Dr. Seuss was largely successful. Students were engaged throughout and chose more literacy-based activities. Pre and post-assessments showed students learned about rhyming, authors, and illustrators. Some challenges included an experiment being difficult to see, and not having time for more Dr. Seuss stories. The student teacher would improve the experiment and include more read-alouds and stories in the future. Students learned the roles of authors and illustrators, gave examples of rhyming, but still needed help describing rhymes. The student teacher's strengths were enthusiasm and new ideas, but planning takes experience they are still gaining from their cooperating teacher.

Successes

I felt there were a lot of successes within my unit student seemed excited engaged and eager to learn

throughout the week. I was very impressed with how the children did during choice time and how many

chose areas such as the library and writing center where normally I don’t see many students at. I felt my

room set up for a reading nook proved to encourage students to pick up books. I could see from my pre

and post assessment that students learned a lot about rhyming, authors and illustrators.

I found that students enjoyed my rhyming games and that they were age appropriate and that my

adaptions for students were all that was needed it helped me see that I know my students and am able

to develop lessons and activities that are developmentally appropriate for all. Students seemed to learn

a lot from my plans and still showed interest after the week of teaching my unit was over.

Challenges

The challenges I found minor but things I could improve for the future. Experimenting with oobleck was

difficult large group activity because students had a hard time seeing my wide shallow container and

needed something taller so they could see more clearly. Students seemed interested in Dr. Seuss but the

end of the week but had many more questions and I felt they had many popular Dr. Seuss stories that

they hadn’t heard that I would have liked to share with the.

Suggestions for future changes

I would have liked to include some read aloud station where students could pick CD book to read to

them as they follow along with. I would have also liked to read one book at morning group time as well

as afternoon group time to have more Dr. Seuss stories shared with students. I would have liked to
change how my oobleck experiment went and had the oobleck in a test tube so that the Oobleck was

less shallow and students were able to see the if items were sinking or floating more successfully.

What did children learn?

Children learned that an author is who writes the book and the illustrator is who creates the pictures in

the book. Children wee able to understand that Dr. Seuss is one of the few authors who also illustrated

their books and that many authors they know have a different person draw the pictures for their work.

Students learned some rhyming words and were able to identify them in stories and games we played

throughout the week. Students were able to give examples of rhymes by the end of the week when

before the week began many were unaware of what a rhyme was let alone able to give an example.

What didn’t children learn?

Though the children can give example of rhymes many were not able to describe what a rhyme is.

Ways to improve learning

I would more opportunities for children to see rhyming words in person and help them make

connections between ending sounds and rhyming both in large group and smaller groups. I would allow

for students to do a little bit of their own experimenting wit Oobleck to extend the learning. I would

have liked to improve student learning by giving them more time with Dr. Seuss books and encourage

them to learn to illustrate and write their own stories.

Strengths of a beginning teacher

I feel my biggest strength as a beginning teacher is that I am eager to teach as well as learn from the

experience and students while teaching. I would say another strength I have is that I come in with some

fresh ideas that were even new to my cooperating teaching that her excited. I feel another strength I
have is how perspective I am to what students are into and how I was able to create a unit that

encouraged a lot of their interests.

Weaknesses of a beginning teacher

A lot of teaching is trial and error and unlike an experienced teacher who has learned a lot as they

taught throughout the years, I’m still learning a lot each day. I feel I could use more experience planning

and building my units as my cooperating teacher has done. This unit took me a lot of time and searching

for ideas when she had a lot of ideas and tricks she has used in the past right up her sleeve.

Goals of future growth

I hope to grow so that I am as confident and prepared as my cooperating teacher is daily. I know she has

twenty-two years of teaching on me but if I continue to grow at the rate, I have throughout this year of

student teaching I know I can become as confident as her. I know that even experienced teachers must

adapt lessons and activities as they go, and it is my goal to be able to better predict adaptions and have

back up plans for every situation. It is my goal to have many ideas and lessons up my sleeve to be able to

share with each group of students I get the pleasure of working with.
