SHERLOCK HOLMES (2009)

The method of how Sherlock Holmes solves crimes is by observation and deduction.
Deduction means the action of subtracting and in connection to what Sherlock is doing it is the
process of learning or taking cues from general set of facts and thinking about how it might
relate to the current situation.
Sherlock Holmes said in the movie “Never theorize before you have data. Invariably, you
end up twisting facts to suit theories instead of theories to suit facts” where he never makes
assumptions instead he works backwards from the effect to its possible cause. He also said
“Data, data, data. I cannot make bricks without clay” meaning before he could come up with a
very sound and probably reason as to why those things happened he must have enough clay, in
which this case is the data. Sherlock Holmes way of solving crime is nothing new in the realm of
crime solving, but what makes it or him so effective is that first he has already extensively
stocked up himself with knowledge that he can withdraw from, second he takes cues out of the
seemingly mundane things which proves he is an avid observer, this is proved by taking note of
the frogs in the concoction of chemicals inside the container that at first glance may just look like
a bunch of dead frogs, and lastly putting the two together by taking cues out of the things that he
observes and withdrawing from his knowledge pool the things that it might mean he can draw a
logical conclusion of what might something be.
The main conflict of the movie is Man versus Man, where it was Sherlock Holmes
against Lord Henry Blackwood and his devious plan to take over the world. Lord Henry
Blackwood came to be from a ritual made by Sir Thomas Rotheram, Lord Chief Justice and
Head of Temple of the Four Orders. Blackwood wanted to take over the new world the Americas
as it was heavily weakened by the civil war there at that time, but he could only do this if he had
the leverage which he can get from the Temple of Four Orders. The Temple of Four Orders was
responsible for pulling the strings on a lot of things, secretly guiding the world. Sherlock on the
other hand was a detective for hire who had been tapped by Inspector Lestrade to get into the
bottom of the 5 murder victims, who were murdered by Blackwood in order to fulfill his ritual
that happened to be cheap conjuring tricks that were inevitably and can be proved by science.
If the movie were to be told in Dr. Watson’s point of view. It would be about a man who
is trying to get married, but often finds himself uncontrollably helping his friend, Sherlock
Holmes, get to the bottom of crimes. Inevitably the conflict would be Man vs himself as he is
trying to find a way to attend to his needs but could not resist just letting his friend do things by
himself.
