Assignments Questions Part _ II

PART-A
Answer should be given only 25 words, Attempt all questions:

Q. 1. What do you mean by Disinfection.

Ans. Disinfection: Disinfection is a process both by filtering out harmful micro-organisms and by adding
disinfectant chemicals. Water is disinfected to kill any pathogens which pass through the filters and to
provide a residual dose of disinfectant to kill or inactivate potentially harmful micro-organisms in the
storage and distribution systems.

Q. 2. Domestic sewage:

Ans. Domestic sewage means sewage that consists of water and human excretions or other waterborne
wastes incidental to the occupancy of a residential building or a non-residential building but not including
manufacturing process water, cooling water, wastewater from water softening equipment, commercial
laundry wastewater, blow down from heating or cooling equipment, water from cellar or floor drains or
surface water from roofs, paved surfaces or yard drains.

Q.3. What is Reverse Osmosis Process?

Ans. Reverse osmosis: Mechanical pressure is applied to an impure solution to force pure water through
a semi-permeable membrane. Reverse osmosis is theoretically the most thorough method of large scale
water purification available, although perfect semi-permeable membranes are difficult to create. Unless
membranes are well-maintained, algae and other life forms can colonize the membranes.

Q.4. What do you mean by D. O of water?

Ans. dissolved oxygen (DO) Amount of oxygen dissolved (and hence available to sustain marine life) in a
body of water such as a lake, river, or stream. DO is the most important indicator of the health of a water
body and its capacity to support a balanced aquatic ecosystem of plants and animals.

Q. 5. What is secondary treatment process?

Ans. It removes the soluble and colloidal organic matter which remains after primary treatment. In the case
of domestic wastewater treatment, the objective of biological treatment is: To stabilize the organic content
To remove nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus Secondary treatment processes may be classified.

Q. 6. What is Sedimentation of water?

Ans. Sedimentation is a physical water treatment process using gravity to remove suspended solids from water. Solid

particles entrained by the turbulence of moving water may be removed naturally by sedimentation in the still water
of lakes and oceans.

Q.7. What is Air Pollution?

Ans. Air pollution is a type of environmental pollution that affects the air and is usually caused by smoke or other
harmful gases, mainly oxides of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen.
Q.8 .What do you mean by Noise Pollution?

Ans. Noise pollution or sound pollution is defined as any sound that is unwanted, or a level of environmental sound
that is likely to irritate nearby individuals, cause distraction, cause hearing damage, or disrupts normal activities and
lowers quality of life
