Non -Linear elements do not have linear current-voltage relationship or they do-not follow Ohm’s law. For eg. Diode
and Transistor
Because of its non linear characteristics we can not find the analytical solution with the KVL or KCL. Instead of that
we use the Graphical Method for solution of the circuit containing single non-linear element. For that we must be
familiar with the concept of DC load line and operating point
Load Line is the Graphical representation of KVL applying in a loop containing DC voltage Source, resistor and one
non -linear element.
The load line, usually a straight line, represents the response of the linear part of the circuit, connected to the
nonlinear device in question.
The load line is determined simply by the applied network, whereas the characteristics are defined by the chosen
device.
The
we get
m = - 1/RD c = VDD /RD now in order to draw a straight line we need at least two point which will give x and y
intercepts
Solving for VD
When we put ID = 0
Solving for ID
When we put VD = 0
Operating Point: The intersection of the dc load line and the V-I characteristics gives the operating point.
ID = VDD /R – VD /R
And so it is impossible to find the analytical solution of the above equations because of the exponential nature.
Instead of that we use the graphical method to find the solution of the above two equations. The intersection point
will gives the solution of the above two equations. Now this intersection point is called as the operation or Quiscient
point of the diode.
