The Crying Stone
Once upon a time, there lived a widow and her only daughter in a hinterland of West Kalimantan
Province, Indonesia. The widow was just an old woman while her daughter was a lovely girl, whose name
was Darmi.
They both lived inadequately in a decrepit hut since Darmi’s father passed away and didn’t leave
any inheritance to his family. Consequently, to fulfill their daily needs, they were forced to work much
harder.
However, Darmi was not a hard-worker, totally different from her mother who worked in the
field everyday while her daughter spent her time staring at her reflection in the mirror. Darmi always
dressed up beautifully and showed it to the local living in the surroundings. She never had the intention to
help her mother and whenever her mother asked her for help, Darmi refused as she was afraid her skin
would turn darken.
Even worse, Darmi begged money from her mother although she knew specifically that they were
financially poor.
“Mom, where is the money?” Darmi asked.
“No! I won’t give it to you, we need this to buy some foods!” her mom replied.
“But I’m running out of moisturizer and my powder! How could you emphasize the need to buy foods
instead of my cosmetics?”
The old widow got angry to her daughter but soon she gave the money to Darmi yet she still had
alternative way to earn money to buy some foods.
One day, Darmi’s mother was going to the nearest market from their home and Darmi forced her
mother to buy some brand new clothes. However, her mother wanted Darmi to accompany her to the
market.
“But I don’t want to go with you!” Darmi said.
Then her mom replied, “And I don’t know which one!”
Then, Darmi gave up and accepted herself to go to the market with her mother with one condition
that she didn’t want to walk along her as she felt ashamed with her mother’s appearance seemed so
contrast with hers.
Along the way in the market, a young man approached her and seemed like he would try to get
Darmi’s attention. But somehow, Darmi didn’t want such a common man.
Then the young man asked her, “Good afternoon, gorgeous! Where are you going?”
“As you can see if you aren’t blind, I’m here looking for new clothes.” she answered.
“Oh I see, then who is that behind you? Is she your mom?” he replied.
“Nope, she is my servant. How could you think she is my mom?” Darmi said with her eye sight purposed
to her mother.
Darmi’s mother felt so angry to hear her only daughter said that, she couldn’t hold it anymore and
intended not to refuse her daughter’s saying. Since then, Darmi’s mother numbled and prayed to the God
to curse her daughter into a stone as her behaviour couldn’t be forgiven. And all of sudden, the sky turned
darken. The loud thunder roared back and forth. The rain was pouring heavily as her mother’s tears
dropped from her eyes.
At that tie, Darmi couldn’t move her foot anymore. Gradually, her feet turned into black stone
that second by second covered her entire body. Everything went on and Darmi’s mother didn’t even
regret her prayings and let God curse her rebelious daughter. When the stone almost completely covered
her entire body, Darmi cried and asked for forgiveness from her mother. However, it has happened and
she couldn’t force the discretion to stopped.
What we can learn from this story is that we must respect our parents, neither it’s our father nor
our mother; they remain so important for our life. Don’t let your behaviour and words hurt them and
make them proud to have you in their life.
