Assignment 2. Two degree of freedom vibration

Loading: 10% of the course mark Due back: Sunday 5 April

Note: Handwritten assignments are not accepted. Submit neatly typed and
formatted assignments using the standard assignment cover page.

1. Determine the natural frequencies and normal modes for the following systems:

2. For the system shown below, what is the frequency range in order that the distance
between the two masses is never less than 0.4 m. (Note that the initial distance is 0.5
m and k1=k2=k3= 1000 N/m. Also m1 = m2 = 10kg)
Harmonic forces are 20N on m1 and 10N on m2, same frequency)
3. If a vehicle can be modelled using the following parameters:
m1 the mass of the vehicle ( = 2m)
m2 the mass of the wheel ( = 0.1m)
k2 the stiffness of suspension ( = 2K)
k1 the stiffness of wheel ( = 1K)

i. Find the natural frequencies and normal modes of the

vehicle suspension system.

ii. If the vehicle is subjected to a road excitation (x3 = Xo

sint), what is the vibration amplitude at both masses.

iii. If the excitation frequency is given as 2.3(K/m)1/2 and a

dynamic absorber of mass m/2 and stiffness k3 was
attached to the body of the vehicle, calculate k3 which
results in complete elimination of the vehicle vibration.

4. A horizontal beam of negligible inertial supports at its midpoint a motor of mass 50

kg. The midpoint of the beam deflects vertically 1 cm under a load of 1200N. It is
observed that, due to rotor unbalance, the midpoint of the beam vibrates with SHM of
amplitude 0.5 cm when the motor is running at 290 rpm. To eliminate the vibration, a
light spring is attached to the beam at midpoint with its lower end supporting a mass
of 2.5 kg. Determine the stiffness of the added spring and the amplitude of motion of
the attached mass.

5. In a certain refrigeration plant a section of the pipe carrying the refrigerant vibrates
violently at the compressor speed of 232 rpm. To eliminate the vibration, it was
proposed to clamp a spring-mass system to the pipe to act as an absorber, tuned to this
speed. For the trial test a 1 kg tuned absorber resulted in resonance speeds at 198 and
272 rpm. If a new absorber is to be designed so that no resonance should occur
between 160 and 320 rpm. Find the mass and spring stiffness of this new absorber.
