Periodic Trends Worksheet

1) Atoms get smaller moving left to right in a period as protons are added and electron shells fill. Down a group, atoms get larger as electron shells are added. 2) Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from an atom. It increases down a group and left to right in a period as it is harder to remove electrons from larger nuclei. 3) Electron affinity is a measure of how strongly an atom attracts an extra electron. It typically increases left to right and down a period as additional protons provide more attraction.
