Warning
● This device is not explosion-proof. Please do not use in any hazardous location.
(Do not replace the batteries in a hazardous location, either)
A hazardous location means any area within a factory or other worksites where an
atmosphere (a hazardous atmosphere) is generated in which a sufficient volume of
explosive gas is mixed with air within the limit of an explosion, or there is a possibility of
generating such an atmosphere.

Precaution
● Refrain from using new batteries mixed with old batteries, and be sure to replace
old batteries with new ones simultaneously.

Memo
● When the device is left unused for long periods without inserting the batteries, be
sure to insert the batteries more than 24 hours before use to secure sensor stability.
When using an AC adapter, be sure to connect it to a 100 V power supply. A slight
electrical current flows to the sensor to keep it warmed up even when the power
supply to the sensor is turned OFF.)

Memo
z The service life of a DNPH filter set is 100 times for the 10-minute measurement and 50
times for the 30-minute measurement provided that the average concentration of
formaldehyde per measurement is 0.1 mg/m3. When a higher than the concentration of
formaldehyde 0.1 mg/m3 is measured, the number of times the filter is used will decrease.
Also make sure to replace the DNPH filter every 6 months, even it is not used many times.

Caution
z Enclose the DNPH filter sets other than the one that is mounted in the storage bag
(aluminum storage bag) and keep it in a refrigerator. In addition, after the measurement,

20. Appendix: Detection Principle of Sensor

A constant potential electrolytic type sensor applies electrolysis to (electrolyzes) a gas at a

specific electrical potential and detects the gas concentration by detecting the electrolytic
current that is so generated. It is possible to selectively detect a target gas by selecting a
given electrode catalyst and a specified potential for electrolysis.

Construction
The sensor consists of an electrolysis cell container and a potentiostatic circuit.
The electrolysis cell container is of such construction that three electrodes (a working
electrode, a counter electrode and a reference electrode) are mounted on a highly
chemical-resistant plastic container, and the inside is filled with an acid aqueous solution
type electrolysis solution. The electrodes that are used consist of gas-permeable Teflon
films that are calcined after they are coated with precious metal catalysts.

Principle
Direct electrolysis is carried out by keeping the working electrode placed between the
boundary faces of the solution and the atmosphere at a constant electrical potential.
Formaldehyde that permeates the Teflon film reacts with water (H2O) on the working
electrode (oxidation reaction of formaldehyde). At that time, a reaction between hydrogen
ions (H+)and electrons makes progress on the counter electrode (oxidation of oxygen). .

Working electrode : HCHO + H2O → CO2 + 4H++ 4e−

Counter electrode : O2 + 4H+ + 4e− → 2H2O

As a whole, it becomes as follows:

HCHO + O2 → CO2 + H2O

As this reaction occurs in proportion to the concentration of formaldehyde, it is possible to

measure the concentration of formaldehyde by measuring the electron(e − ), namely
electric current that flows the external current.

Selective detection of gas

●Selectivity due to the setting of electrode potential
Take into consideration a case in which 2 types of gases, A and B are present, and
they cause an oxidation reaction on the electrodes.
The potential caused by electrolysis reaction is different depending on the materials used,
and thus it is thought that the relationship between the potential and electrolysis current is
as shown in the following figure: .
Here, if a working electrode potential at EW, the gas A electrolysis reaction
progresses and the current flows. The electrolysis reaction of the gas B does not progress.
In other words, setting the working electrode to a target gas can set an optimum electrode
potential. And thus, it is possible to detect the target gas by curtailing the interference of
other gases.

Principle of DNPH filter type formaldehyde detector

DNPH has a function to absorb aldehydes and ketones such as acetones. In this device,
the DNPH filter is mounted on the front face of the sensor. Measuring in this condition can
indicate gases such as VOC from which aldehydes and ketones such as acetones are
eliminated. Next, measuring after turning that indicated value to the basic value (zero
value) and eliminating the DNPH filter can display the output of aldehydes and ketones. In
the case of the electrochemical type sensor, the sensitivity to ketones is initially low, and
the majority accounts for the output of aldehydes. This device displays the concentration
of formaldehyde by using a microprocessor to automatically switch over between the 2
types of filters with and without DNPH.
