Components List

The document describes the components of a light-sensitive object counter circuit including resistors, integrated circuits, and a light dependent resistor. It provides details on how the circuit operates by using the LDR to generate pulses when light is interrupted, which are counted by an IC74160 synchronous counter. The counter displays the count on 7-segment displays. Components are tested and any troubles encountered like loose connections are troubleshooted. Potential applications of the circuit include counting objects on a conveyor belt or guests entering a room.

CIRCUIT OPERATION
The light dependent Resistor (LDR) is a variable resistor whose
resistance decreases with increase in light intensity and increases with decrease in
light intensity. When a beam of light incident on LDR is obstructed, IC7 i.e.
IC7413 generates a positive going pulse because of the change in resistance of the
LDR.

Each time a beam is interrupted, a pulse is produced. The LDR can

detect interruptions even few microseconds apart. These pulses are fed to IC1, i.e.
IC74160, which is wired as a synchronous counter, where the pulses are applied
simultaneously to pin2 of all the counters. IC74160 has a terminal count (pin 15)
which goes high after the clock that changes the state of the LSD counter to 9. This
output is used to enable the following counter to be incremented on the next clock
pulse.

This counter counts the number of pulse received. Maximum count of

the counter is 999, after which the counter again starts with 000. Counter can be
reset by simply pressing the reset switch, which gives a high pulse to pin 1of
IC74160.

IC7447, a BCD to seven segment decoder, drives the common anode

displays. Here 330 Ω is connected to pin 3 and 8 of the display for current limiting
purpose. The decimal point is not controlled by IC7447.The number of digits can
be desired.

Such a counter could be used for counting objects on a conveyor belt etc.
For domestic purpose, it could be used to count the number of guest entering or
leaving a room (provided entrance and exit are separate).

pin was not connected properly.
Resoldered the loose connection and
desoldered the short pins.
