INTRODUCTION

Community Health Information Tracking System (CHITS) is the first medical record
system that is used widely in the Philippines. It is an extensible, segmental, open-source
information system for medical health centers. It gathers prevailing mundane health data from
vertical programs in the Field Health Service Information System (FHS) and assimilates those
data into a cohesive, complete high-tech information system. With the use of CHITS,
community-based health information are readily accessible and available not only to public
health organizations demanding community-level information but also to the public itself which
makes the information. The CHITS permits the public to use the data obtained for local decision-
making and health planning. In addition to the software program, CHITS also comprises
organized capability-building programs intended to develop the health information systems
within local health centers, regardless of the level of computerization advancement.
CHITS plays an important role in health care facilities especially in protecting, storing
and disseminating information. CHITA was constructed to collect data and produce reports
which health personnel need and decision-makers want. CHITS is made up of several
components which are projected to lead to the gathering and distribution of good quality data.
The CHITS is also a free program that is installed. Aside from organizing and collecting data,
CHITS also reduces data redundancy that might interfere in the records. The file stored in the
software program contained multiple files that were stored in many different locations in a
system or even across multiple systems. Because of this, there were sometimes multiple copies
of the same file which lead to data redundancy. Sharing of data was also made possible using
CHITS where in this process, the authorized health personnel of the database can share the data
among the authorized people nor workforce. To ensure the privacy of data, the program has
created several levels of authorization to access the data, and therefore the data can merely be
shared based on the right authorization protocols being followed and implemented.
CHITS is now widely used in the Philippines especially in health care facilities because
of the numerous advantages that have been demonstrated that surely increased the efficiency of
the health workforce in being compassionate to their constituents and patients through more
knowledgeable and informed decision-making.
With the accessibility and readiness of Information Communication Technology or ICT,
such as personal computers, tablets, and mobile phones, also automate tasks involved in data
collection and analysis, minimizing data loss, protecting records from destruction and facilitating
better access to health center data.
LORMA MEDICAL CENTER PROFILE

Lorma Medical Center

Lorma Medical Center is the best known and largest private hospital in Region 1. Since it
was launched in 1934 it has set the standard for quality care cleanliness specialization and
technology—and it is one of the leading Medical Centers of the North.

Lorma Hospital was founded by Dr. & Mrs. Rufino N. Macagba Sr. ,both physicians. The
name LORMA stands for their family names: LOR-enzana the maiden name of Dr. Crispina
Macagba and MA-cagba.

The hospital began admitting patients on May 1,1934 auspiciously during celebration of
Hospital Day. It started in the four bedroom house of the couple. As patients increased, attracted
by the fine medical care and personalized service, more rooms were added. Over the years many
renovations and new constructions have brought about the modern Lorma Medical Center of
today. Currently, Lorma has been approved by the DOH for 200 inpatient beds. Over 300
employees work at Lorma, and over 100 doctors are with international training & certification.

The ongoing construction on the East side of the Medical Arts Building will add 60 new
patient rooms, a new Dietary Unit, a first class state-of-the-art Physical Therapy Unit, and a
Conference Room. The new Annex ICU, on the second floor, recently opened for service to the
public. This expansion is intended to render enhanced quality services, give patients a pleasant
environment for healing and provide the use of a fully equipped modern critical care unit.
MANAGEMENT TEAM
LEARNINGS AND CONCLUSION
We conducted an interview at the Lorma Medical Center located in San Fernando, La
Union regarding the use and the advantages of having a Community Health Information
Tracking System (CHITS). CHITS is an open-source information system that collects health data
and integrates them into a more unified, comprehensive and computerized information system.
With the help of technology, improvement in the field of health, especially to the governance and
management of health informatics, made a drastic change because of the development and
implementation of Information Communication Technology or ICT for health recognition as an
enabling tool to help meet service delivery objectives.

In searching for patient records, it can be generated automatically upon admission and it
only takes a few seconds as does searching for laboratory requests, results and reports. Having
access to electronic medical records have a lot of advantages like reducing data redundancy
because the hospital uses CHITS and has a software program that prevents the multiplication of
data to avoid confusion in medical records and also to save data storage. Data sharing is also
part of one of the advantages of CHITS, in which data is being shared with individuals or in a
large number of groups and the best part is that it cannot be accessed unless the person who’s
trying to access it undergo a proper authorization. Preserving data integrity, improving data
security, implementing data privacy, creating data backup and recovery and ensuring data
consistency were also the features of CHITS.

All of the perks of having CHITS in a health care facility like Lorma Medical Center
helps them to be more efficient in working and more organized in data storage. By keeping
organized data, health personnel will save time searching for health information and will have
more time to work on important tasks, thus increasing the team’s productivity. Aside from that,
we also learned that a well-organized information culture triggers a more relaxed working
environment, as opposed to a cluttered or disorganized health facility where health workers are
constantly searching for items or through countless pile of patients’ medical records.

In all, we were lucky to gain all this information about the CHITS and we would like to
thank Lorma Medical Center for accommodating us.
