Grade4-5 - Growing Patterns Lesson

This lesson plan is for a 4th/5th grade class on discovering growing patterns. Students will understand what defines a growing pattern and be able to extend patterns by 2-3 terms. They will work in stations to create numeric and geometric patterns, write pattern rules, and make predictions related to growing patterns. The teacher will observe students and have them record their work to assess understanding of extending and describing growing patterns.

Growing Patterns Lesson Plan

Grade: 4/5 Lesson Title: Discovering Growing Patterns Length: 40 Min

Strand(s): Patterning and Algebra
Learning Goals: Understand the definition of a growing pattern and be able to extend a growing
pattern to the next 2-3 terms
Overall Expectation(s):
 describe, extend, and create a variety of numeric and geometric
patterns, make predictions related to the patterns, and investigate
repeating patterns involving reflections
 demonstrate an understanding of equality between pairs of
expressions, using addition, subtraction, and multiplication
 demonstrate, through investigation, an understanding of the use of
variables in equations.
Specific Expectation(s):
 extend, describe, and create repeating, growing, and shrinking
number patterns

 connect each term in a growing or shrinking pattern with its term

number (e.g., in the sequence 1, 4, 7, 10, ..., the first term is 1, the
second term is 4, the third term is 7, and so on), and record the
patterns in a table of values that shows the term number and the
term

 create a number pattern involving addition, subtraction, or

multiplication, given a pattern rule expressed in words

 extend and create repeating patterns that result from reflections,

through investigation using a variety of tools

 make predictions related to growing and shrinking geometric and

numeric patterns

Math Vocabulary:
- Core: The elements that repeat in a repeating pattern
- Attributes: things that change in a geometric (shape) pattern. (shape, size, colour,
texture)
- Types of Patterns: AB, ABC, AAB, etc.

Materials:
- Growing patterns worksheet
- Growing patterns game board and questions
- Types of patterns wheel and guide
- Numeric patterning worksheet
- Coloured counters
- Clear shapes
- Wooden shapes

Before (MINDS ON) 15 Minutes

- What is a repeating pattern? Acquire students’ answers
- Record what a term and attribute is
- Discuss growing number and shape patterns. Ask students to the board to complete the
patterns
- Students will be shown how to write a pattern rule and write the pattern rules
- Review types of patterns and ask students to the board
- Growing Number Pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16

- Growing Shape Pattern:

4 8 12 16 20 24

- Additional Example (if needed)

During (ACTION) 20 Minutes

- Students will separate into their colour groups and be assigned a math center to begin at,
if there is time students will rotate to multiple center
Center 1: Spin and Make a Pattern  After spinning the types of pattern wheel (AB, ABC, AAB),
students will create a pattern using various manipulatives
Center 2: Number patterns worksheet
Center 3: Patterning problems worksheet; create your own patterns with the help of
manipulatives
Center 4: Patterning Reindeer Game Instructions attached
After (CONSOLIDATE/DEBRIEF) 5 Minutes
- While floating between the different math centers, I will observe how well the students
are grasping the topic of growing patterns
- Students will be asked inquiry questions relating to their activity at the math center
Modifications & Differentiated Instruction
- Centers will have a variation of math levels to meet each student need
- Focus will be placed on growing patterns with only shapes or only numbers depending on
students’ levels
- Fewer questions will need to be completed
- Simple worded instructions will be provided
- Multiple ways to demonstrate learning- through worksheets, group work, and hands on
activities
Assessment/Evaluation
Observation
- During the activities, observations will be made throughout to view if the students are
able to complete the task, if they need prompts, ask questions, work as a team, and
expand their thinking.
Recorded Work
- Students will record their findings at the centers in their math notebook/on the
worksheets
- Reviewing the worksheets and activities in the math books will be done to see how well
students understood the topic

Pattern Game Directions

 You will need 4 players

 The first player spins the spinner, then pulls a card.
 If the player can answer the question, they move forward the
number of spaces on the spinner.
 Continue playing until someone wins!
