In the name of Allah, the most gracious and the most merciful

All praises and thanks to Allah who has made the act of Dawah as
one of his beloved to reach closer to him. Allah mentions in the
Surah Fussilat: 33)

And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness
and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."

Salutations and peace be on our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAWS.

For a Da’ee involved in Dawah activities, here are the principles of

Dawah and its methodology in view of The Quran and Sunnah.

Principles of Dawah.
Sincerity: Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab R.A. : I heard Allah's Apostle SAW saying, "The
reward of one’s deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward
according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to
marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for."(Sahih Bukhari, The Book of Revelation-
Book 1, Hadith No: 1)

(110:1) When the help comes from Allah, and victory (is granted), 1

(110:2) and you see people entering Allah's religion in multitudes, 2

(110:3) then extol the praise3 of your Lord and pray to Him for forgiveness.4 For He
indeed is ever disposed to accept repentance.

Passion and Zeal: ‫

“Then perhaps you would kill yourself through grief over them, [O Muhammad], if they do not
believe in this message [and] out of sorrow”. (Quran 18:6)

1
Knowledge: Knowledge of calling people towards Allah. Gain knowledge about the people whom you are
trying to give Dawah to.

Yusuf

(12:108) Tell them plainly: "This is my way: I call you to Allah, on the basis of clear
perception - both I and those who follow me. Allah - Glory be to Him - is free of
every imperfection.8 I have nothing to do with those who associate others with Allah
in His Divinity."

Actions: A da’ee should be very vigilant about implementing everything in his life for what all
he preaches and become an ideal and a model for what all he is preaching giving no chance for
the evil people to talk about. Allah mentions about Shoaib AS that he told his people

(11:88) Shu'ayb said: 'My people! What do you think? If I stand on clear evidence
from my Lord, and He has also provided me a handsome provision from Himself 8 -
(should I be ungrateful to Him and share your error and iniquity?) Nor do I desire to
act contrary to what I admonish you.9 I desire nothing but to set things right as far as I
can. My succour is only with Allah. In Him have I put my trust, and to Him do I
always turn.

Wisdom:

2
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with
them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed
from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.

(Surah Nahl 16:125)

He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has
certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of
understanding.

(Surah Baqarah 2:269)

We can understand the importance of Wisdom from the fact that before the chest of Prophet Muhammad
SAWS was filled with wisdom before it was filled with Prophethood.

Wisdom is something that inhibits inside a person and is a kind of trait with which a person acts
according to his surroundings and uses his best in providing guidance and usage of words based on the
situation without hurting the sentiments of anyone. Soft spoken when needed and hard when its required
and always being vigilant of not embarrassing the person you are in conversation with.

The people without wisdom fail to excel in any part of their life rather will fail in their relationships, and
it is extremely important for a Da’ee to have wisdom.

People who do not use wisdom are the ones who almost always fail in every aspect of life. For a Dayee,
wisdom is one of the foremost qualities needed for dawah purpose.

Encouragement

Prophet Musa AS and Haroon AS was asked “

And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear
[ Allah ]."

Surah Taha 20:44

3
Those are the ones of whom Allah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from
them but admonish them and speak to them a far-reaching word.

Surah Nisa 4:63

The tactics of encouragement are really beneficial because the Da’ee in this approach uses the best
possible strategies and sweet language with empathy towards the person he is addressing. Results of
which are the person gets inspired and makes way to the heart for the Da’ee.

Good conduct and character: The mother of believers Hazrath Ayesha R.A. says that “I heard Prophet
SAW saying, “Undoubtedly, a momin because of his good conduct is raised to a level of a fasting person
and the one who prays during the night. (Sahih Bukhari: 4798)

The companion of the Holy Prophet SAW, Abu Darda RA, said that I heard Prophet SAW saying “In the
balance there is nothing more heavier than a good conduct. (Sahih Bukhari: 4799)

Patience:

While calling people towards Allah, maintain utmost patience in all the problems that you encounter.

High Hope:

Its really important for the Da’ee to have very high and strong hopes. He should not be effected by the
results of his Dawah nor by the situation of the people who he is addressing. He should not lose hope and
expectations with Allah no matter how much time it takes for him. We have very high examples in the
life of the Prophets, Prophet Nuh AS called people towards Allah for 950 years.

Correct sequence in Dawah: Tauheed  Hereafter  Prophet hood

Do’s and Don’ts of giving Dawah:

We should be aware of the gradual methodology adapted in Dawah.

We should not present all the substance at once.

Quran also directs us to be gradual in our giving of Dawah.

Prophet SAW also had adopted the method of gradualism and asked the companions to
do the same.

When sending the companion Ma’az bin Jabal R.A. to Yemen, the Prophet SAW, Listen,
you are going towards the people of Book, you must first call them towards Tauheed and
Prophethood; and if the accept that God is one and Muhammed SAW is His Prophet then
explain that Almighty Allah has prescribed prayers five times a day. When the accept

4
this, then explain to them that Allah SWT has prescribed Charity (Zakath) to be colleted
from wealthy persons and distributed among the poor people. (Mishkath Hadith)

If we do not take care of gradualism in Dawah then the purpose of Dawah will be
harmful rather than beneficial.

Starting with the common terms. Surah Al-Imran (3:64)

Use the best possible options available.

Plan your Dawah Assignments.

Adapting positive approach and refraining from negative approach.

Avoid indulging in Debates/Arguments. (Surah Ankaboot 29:46)

Avoid sensitive and non-beneficial topics. (Surah Al-Maidah 5:15)

Speak in the language of the Mad’oo. (Surah Ibrahim 14:4)

Take cognizance of Madoo’s religious and mental capacity.

Ali RA said, talk to people about the knowledge that they are aware about. Would you like the
people to deny Allah and his Prophet SAWS (Sahih Bukhari 127)

Abdullah bin Masood RA said, when you inform people more than their mental capacity, it
becomes a test for them (Sahih Muslim)

Study of Comparative Religion (Why and How)

Research of Accepted Religion

Difference between Deen and Religion: Most commonly, Religion and Deen are used as a
synonym but Deen serves a much bigger perspective than religion.

What is Deen?

Deen can be best described as perfect and complete way of life. It covers all aspects of your life
which includes but not limited to Matters of Faith, Devotion, Prayers, Sociological, Economic
and Political. The objective of Deen is to better an individual and success of the community as a
whole.

6
Deen of Prophets

From Prophet Adam (AS) to Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), all prophets preached the same
Deen, Deen ul Islam. XXXX, after them, the people fabricated the deen and destoyed it. For this
reason, Allah sends down his Messengers who can convey the true deen to the masses. We have
received Deen in its complete form from Prophet Muhammad SAWS and till date it’s still saved
in its original form.
