Oral language observation

I was able to observe the oral language of two of my neighbor's children. The children are

of different ages and sexes. The boy is two years of age while the girl is four years old. They are

close, and they like playing while in the house. Being my neighbors, I spend some time with

these children, and this has improved understanding of their oral languages. The two years old

boy can understand simple instructions when given including those containing two keywords.

For instance, when I say "come here" he understands and moves towards me. He also shows

interest when I tell simple stories. There are times when he asks simple questions, and he seems

to enjoy pretend-play when given his toys.

The four-year girl has also shown some impressive oral language development. She has a

better understanding of complex language structures. In most cases, she asks lots of ‘why,' ‘what'

and ‘where' type of questions because she is interested in finding out new information. When she

meets with her peers, she takes part in more complicated make-believe play sequences. Being

that I am always friendly, whenever I make simple jokes with her she seems to enjoy, but in most

cases, her jokes do not make sense. At times she seems impressive especially when trying to talk

to other kids so that she can make new friends. She even goes as far as telling about what she

wants to do when she is with her friends.
