8.2 The Reciprocal Function Family
Parent Function
The reciprocal function and rational functions are the first we
will study that have asymptotes. An asymptote is a line that a
curve approaches as it heads towards infinity.

Vertical Asymptotes of the reciprocal function correspond with limitations
on the domain of the function. They are x = lines and are determined by
values of that make the denominator zero. The graph can NEVER cross a
vertical asymptote.
Horizontal Asymptotes indicate the behavior of functions as they approach
infinity and negative infinity. They can be crossed by functions but they are
not crossed by the reciprocal function.

The general form of the reciprocal family is:
where x = h
If is positive, the graph is in Quadrants I and III.
If is negative, the graph is in Quadrants II and IV.
shifts the graph to the right or left - right if is negative
and left if is positive
shifts the graph up and down - up if is positive and down if
is negative
The vertical asymptote is at and the domain is all real
numbers except
The horizontal asymptote is at and the range is all real
numbers except y = k

Desmos - Reciprocal Function Transformations
Translations are easily graphed by moving the asymptotes
and 3 key points on each branch of the parent function as we
did with the square and cube root functions.
