The document discusses changes being made to the liquid level sensors used on RTAC, RTHD, and RTHC units, with a new more reliable capacitive sensor replacing the older reed switch sensor. It provides part numbers and instructions for installing and testing the new sensors.

The document states that a new more reliable capacitive liquid level sensor is replacing the older stepped reed type sensor. This sensor has no moving parts. It will be installed on all RTHD units after March 2005 and on RTAC units starting in April 2006, and is available as a replacement for RTHC units.

The document mentions two types of new liquid level sensors: an analog sensor for RTHC units and an LLID sensor for CH530 and UCP2 products. The LLID sensor requires a change in the unit configuration to bind properly.

Liquid Level Sensor
Order Number: RLC-SVD02B-EN Date: March 2006

Introduction
The purpose of this bulletin is to advise customers of a new Liquid Level Sensor (LLS)
installed on all RTAC and RTHD units. This new style LLS will be the service parts
replacement for RTHC units. This bulletin discusses the new sensor, check out
procedure and the part numbers associated with it.

NOTICE: Warnings and Cautions appear at appropriate sections through-

out this literature. Read these carefully.
WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to
alert against unsafe practices.
CAUTION: Indicates a situation that may result in equipment or property-
damage only accidents.

Discussion
The new level sensor is a capacitive based switch vs. the older stepped reed type
switch. This new switch is more reliable and has no moving parts. It is less sensitive
to foam and will provide consistent operation across the operating map. This new
sensor can be installed on existing chillers using an adapter. This sensor will also be
available from service parts for RTHC units. There will be two sensors available, one
for CH530 products and one for UCP2 products.

 WARNING
Contains Refrigerant!
System contains oil and refrigerant under high pressure. Recover refrigerant to
relieve pressure before opening the system. See unit nameplate for refrigerant
type. Do not use non-approved refrigerants, refrigerant substitutes, or
refrigerant additives.

Failure to follow proper procedures or the use of non-approved refrigerants,

refrigerant substitutes, or refrigerant additives could result in death or serious
injury or equipment damage.

Sensor

Adaptor Plug

There are 2 capacitor sensors in the copper tube. The lower sensor is used to
determine the capacitance of the liquid (refrigerant and oil mixture). The upper sensor
is used to determine the height of the liquid in the evaporator.

Analog Sensor - Used on RTHC

The sensor is a drop in replacement for the old sensor with the addition of the plug.

Red wire is +5 VDC power

White wire is the signal
Black wire is the ground

LLID Sensor - Used on CH530 products

This sensor will bind the same as the old sensor, a change to the unit configuration is
needed before the new sensor will bind.

Check-out Procedure
1. Slide a piece of covered wire into tube on both sides of the sensor, gently push
wire against PC sensor.
Be careful not to damage the sensor with the wire
2. Level should change. The actual level will very depending on the wire that is used.
Any covered wire will work. The figure below shows the test being done with bus
cable.

Or

1. Immerse the sensor in POE oil completely

2. Level should read approximately +1.1 inches (28 mm)

Parts Ordering Information
The following table reviews the new valve, plug and canister part numbers.

Description Part Number

Analog Sensor - RTHC SEN01315

LLID Sensor - RTHD SEN01219

LLID Sensor - RTAC SEN01218

Use with Canister HUS03475

LLID Sensor - RTAC SEN01219

Adaptor Plug ADP01123

Canister HUS03777

When installing the new sensor on a chiller in the field there are two options. The
adaptor plug can be installed in the existing canister or the canister can be replaced.
Full flow ball valves can also be added to the copper lines if desired for future service.

Product Changes
All RTHD units built after March 1, 2005 will have the new liquid level sensor installed.
The new sensor will be installed on RTAC units starting in April 2006. The new sensor
is available for RTHC.

The new unit design sequence (digit 10 and 11 in the unit model number) for the
change is:

M0 for RTHD
K0 for RTAC
