Class Description
In Biology, students conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods
during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific
problem solving. Students in Biology study a variety of topics that include: structures and
functions of cells and viruses; growth and development of organisms; cells, tissues, and
organs; nucleic acids and genetics; biological evolution; taxonomy; metabolism and energy
transfers in living organisms; living systems; homeostasis; and ecosystems and the
environment.

Class Rules
1. Be on time and prepared to learn.
2. Follow all classroom procedures.
3. Be respectful and kind to your classmates, teachers, and friends.
4. Do not interrupt while I am teaching or another student is talking.
5. Have fun!
Class Procedures
● Bell Ringers/Warm-Ups: Students must copy down the agenda and warm-up on the
board each day.
● Tardy Policy: If students are not in their seats five minutes after the bell rings,​ ​they
will be counted tardy.
● Absences​: ​Students must collect work from the Absent Folder in the front of the
classroom.
● Make-up Work: Set up a time with me to make up tests or quizzes. Class
assignments must be made up by the number of days students were absent for. E.g.
absent for 2 days, assignments are due 2 class periods later
● Turning in assignments: Students must turn in completed assignments in the tray
with their class period on it.
● Late work policy: If homework and class assignments are turned in late, ten points
will be deducted from the assignment grade for each day that the assignment is late.
NOTE: After five days, the assignment grade will be 0.
● Cell phone policy: Students must turn their devices on ​SILENT ​at ​ALL ​times. They
may not use their devices without my permission.

● Leaving the room: If students must leave the room for any reason, they must inform
me before leaving. They may NOT leave during instruction time.
● Ending class: In the last 10 minutes, students will have free time. They will be able
to do whatever they want but they may not line up at the door.
● Participation: ALL students must participate in classroom activities. Students will be
graded weekly on participation.

Consequences
1. First Violation: ​Verbal warning
2. Second Violation: ​Teacher-student conference, email to parents
3. Third Violation: ​Parent-teacher conference, documentation of student behavior
4. Fourth Violation: ​Student sent to Assistant Principal’s office, 1 hour Detention

Grades
Daily (10%)- ​Homework/Class assignments/Participation
Minor(40%)-​Quizzes/Labs
Major(50%)-​Tests/Projects

Lab Expectations
1. Read all instructions and procedures before starting.
2. Do not start until the teacher gives permission.
3. Avoid open-toed shoes and tie back hair.
4. Always wear goggles and an apron.
5. Do not play around with dangerous lab materials.

Materials
1. Binder with 3 dividers(Warm-Ups, Assignments, Notes)
2. Notebook paper or composition notebook
3. Pencils, erasers, pens, highlighters, markers, color pencils
