INTRODUCTION
Complementary foods are
foods other than breast
milk or infant
formula(liquids,semisolids
, and solids) introduced to
an infant to provide
nutrients.
Complementary foods

little benefit to the infant
and may even be harmful
due to the possibility of
choking, developing food
allergies, or causing an
infant to consume less than
the appropriate amount of
breast milk or infant
formula.

The infant may have indigestion, pain in abdomen,
weaning diarrhea, skin rash may be in case of food
allergy and psychological upset of the baby due to
withdrawn from breast milk and sucking. The
problem should be managed carefully.
Weaning should be started between 4 to 6 months of
age to all children but breast feeding to be continued
upto 2 years of age or beyond
Delayed weaning result in malnutrition and growth
failure.

9 to 12 months
More variety of household’s foods can be added. New
food items like fish, meat, chicken can be introduced
during this period. The infant can eat everything cooked
at home but spices and condiments to be avoided. Feeds
need not to be mashed but should be soft and well
cooked. Breast feeding to be continued.
12 to 18 months
The child can take all food cooked in the family and
needs half amount of mother diet. Number of feeds can
be 4 to 5 times or according to the child’s need. Breast
feeding to be continued.
