Handout 1

The document provides instructions for drawing various polygons, conic sections, scales, and vernier scales. It includes how to draw a regular polygon given the number of sides and side length. It also provides instructions for constructing ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas given properties like the distance between the focus and directrix and eccentricity. The document defines different types of scales like full scale, reduced scale, and enlarged scale. It provides examples of how to construct diagonal scales and vernier scales to measure various units of length and at different representative fractions.

Engineering Drawing POLYGONS & CONICS & SCALES Handout-1

POLYGONS ::
1. Draw a polygon of 7 sides by general method.take side as 30mm.
a) Draw a OCTAGON of side 30mm by general method.
2. Construct a regular pentagon of side 30mm
3. Inscribe a regular heptagon inside the given circle of 68 mm diameter
4. Construct a regular heptagon of 30 mm side and inscribe a circle in it.
5. Describe a regular pentagon about a circle of 80 mm diameter
6. Draw overlapping regular pentagon, hexagon and a heptagon on a common edge of side 40mm.
7. Inscribe a regular octagon in a square of 50 mm side
CONICS ::
1. Construct an ellipse, with distance of the focus from the directrix as 50 mm and eccentricity as 2/3. Also
draw normal and tangent to the curve at a point 40 mm from the directrix.
2. Construct a parabola, with the distance of the focus from the directrix as 50 mm. Also, draw normal and
tangent to the curve, at a point 40 mm from the directrix.
3. Construct a hyperbola, with distance between the focus and the directrix as 50 mm and eccentricity 3/2.
Also, draw normal and tangent to the curve at a point 30 mm from the directrix.
4. Construct an ellipse by Oblong Method in a rectangle whose sides are 100mm and 80mm respectively.
5. Inscribe an ellipse in a parallelogram having sides 150mm and 10mm long and an
included angle of 1200.
SCALES ::
 Scales are 1. Full Scale (1:1) 2. Reduced Scale (1:5) 3. Enlarged Scale (10:1)
 Representative Fraction (R.F.)= Length of the Drawing / Actual Length of object
 10mm=1cm ; 10cm=1decimeter; 10decimeters=1m; 10m=1decameter; 10decameter=1hectometer;
10hectometers=1Km; 1inch=2.54cm; 12inches=1foot; 3feet=1yard
DIAGONAL SCALE:-
1. Construct a diagonal scale of R.F.=1:32,00,000 to show kilometers and long enough to measure upto 400
kilometers. Show the distance of 257 Km and 333Km on your scale.
2. Construct a diagonal scale of 1/48, showing meters, decimeters and centimeters and to measure up to
6m.Mark a length of 3.76m on it.
3. On a map, the distance between two points is 14cm.The real distance between them is 20 km. Draw a
diagonal scale of this map to read kilometers and hectometers and to measure up to 25km.Show a
distance of 17.6km on this scale.
4. An area of 144sq.cm on a map represents an area of 36sq.km on the field. Find the R.F. of the scale for
this map and draw a diagonal scale to show kilometers, hectometers and decameters and to measure up
to 10 km. Indicate on the scale a distance of 7 kilometers, 5 hectometers and 6 decameters.
VERNIER SCALE:-
1. Construct a vernier scale to read meters, decimeters and centimeters and long enough to measure up
to 4m.R.F. of the scale is 1/20. Mark on your scale a distance of 2.28m.
2. Construct a vernier scale to show readings of 1/10 th of a meter when 3cm represents 10m. Construct the
scale to read up to 60m and mark distances of 35.3m and 47.3m on your scale.
3. Draw a vernier scale of R.F.= 1:2.5 to show decimeters, centimeters and millimeters. The scale should
be capable of reading up to 4 decimeters. Mark on your scale the following distances: (a)3.23dm and
(b)3.65dm.
4. Construct a vernier scale of R.F.=1/80 to read inches and to measure upto 15 yards.
