CERTIFICATION AND

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR

MECHATRONICS AND
AUTOMATION SPECIALIST
/ENGINEER

Engr. Gamaliel F. Itao, PEE , M.Entr.

Chairman, Mechatronics and Robotics Society of the Philippines
What is Mechatronics?

Mechatronics – the new word for

Industrial Automation - is defined as the
synergistic integration of Mechanical,
Electrical, Electronics and computing
technology in the development and
production of Automated and Intelligent
Systems and Machines.
Factory Automation is a growing concern
of the Philippine Industries in order to
remain competitive in both domestic and
Global Markets.

Local companies are upgrading their

conventional manufacturing equipment to
a more productive and efficient system.
They make up a large portion of these
automated equipment embedded with
Mechatronics and Automation devices
such as:
1 Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
2 Motion Controllers (Inverters and Servo
Motors)
3 Fluidics (Pneumatics and Hydraulics)
4 Human Machine Interface (HMI)
5 Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
(SCADA).
SCADA is already an
integral part of
electrical power plants
generation and
transmission.
However, another greater concern
is the brain drain or flight abroad of
our Highly Skilled Industrial
Automation and Mechatronics
Engineers , Specialist and
technicians and to some extent ,
the pirating of these highly skilled
personnel .
Technical Education and Skills
Development Authority (TESDA) with the
help of Industry experts from MRSP has
promulgated the newly upgraded
training regulations on Mechatronics
Servicing with three (3) modular National
Certification, namely:

Mechatronics NC II
Mechatronics NC III
Mechatronics NC IV
The Commission on Higher Education
(CHED ) is also developing diploma
courses on Bachelor in Engineering
Technology ( BET ) Major in
Mechatronics and Automation Engg

And the Senior High School of the

DEP ED track preparation for the BET
programs shall be STEM.
