According to the 1997 Census Update Survey, 73.0 percent of Montgomery

County’s resident population is white, 13.4 percent are black and another 10.9 percent
are Asian or Pacific Islanders. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin (of any race) comprise
8.6 percent of the County’s residents. In comparison, the nation is 82.7 percent white,
12.7 percent black, 3.7 percent Asian, and 11.0 percent Hispanic/Latino. Montgomery
County has the largest Hispanic and Asian populations in the State; in fact, almost half
of Maryland’s Hispanic and Asian populations live in the County. Hispanics/Latinos, with
an annual growth rate since 1990 of 6.1, percent is the fastest growing minority group in
the County, followed by Asians at 5.3 percent growth per year. The black population
increased by 4.1 percent per year while the non-Hispanic white majority has a negative
annual growth rate of -0.3 percent.

interstate movers. Montgomery County is not a population sinkhole; 6 percent, or
approximately 47,100 people, move out per year and the County is the fourth largest
source of Maryland’s intra-state movers.

Foreign-born immigration spurs County’s growth and cosmopolitan milieu

The percentage of persons born outside the United States and currently living in
Montgomery County has risen from 18.6 percent in 1990 to 21.9 percent in 1997.
Moreover, almost one-third of the County’s population lives in a household where the

Maturing County is aging in place

Montgomery County is a maturing suburban county with an aging population and

declining household mobility. The median age of all heads of households increased
since 1987 from 44 years to 47 years in 1997. The influence of the younger, new in-
mover households averaging 39 years of age and heading one-fifth of the County’s
households is ineffectual in swaying the balance of the median age when the average
age of over half of long term resident householders is 56. Householder age is expected
to continue creeping upwards as the dominating post-World War II baby boomers age.
Montgomery County, as did nearly every state in the nation, recorded a decline in the

1997 CUS Summary Report

number of householders ages 25 to 34, a natural result of the aging baby boomers and
the smaller cohort of the Generation Xers. Boomers are not only advancing in years,
they are aging in place. Between 1987 and 1997, the frequency of overall residential
turnover and mobility in the County declined as the median length of residency rose from
5 years to 6 years.

Senior population increased by one-third since 1987

In 1997, approximately 93,620 people over the age of 65 years live in

Montgomery County. Of the elderly residents, 43.8 percent are over 75 years old.
Between 1987 and 1997, Montgomery County’s elderly population increased by one
third, or 3.3 percent annually, while the number of frail elderly, those 75 years of age and
older, increased by 71.2 percent during this same time period, from 23,945 to 41,000,
amounting to a gain of 7.1 percent a year. As a percent of the total County population,
the over 65 years age group grew from 10.5 percent in 1987 to 11.4 percent in 1997.
According to the current population forecast, the percentage of elderly in the County is
expected to increase to 12.9 percent in 2010, the brink before baby boomers join the
over 65 ranks, and continue upward to 14.9 percent of the total population by 2025.

the birth peak of 1990. The crest of
the prevalent baby boomer households, in their mid-fifties in 2000, is moving into the
empty-nest stage. Baby boomers blessed with increasing longevity mean more married
couple households later in life, but also more single-person households of very elderly
persons beginning in 2020. On the other hand, the high fertility rates of recent
immigrants and the County’s current immigration pattern of consolidating families in this
country appear likely to continue and tend to bring larger households. The latest
household forecast predicts a relatively stable household size until 2005, and then a
drop to 2.50 persons per household in 2025.

Increased labor force participation by women

Gains in Montgomery County resident employment figures have been achieved

mainly through increases in jobs held by women. Growth in resident female employment

participation surmounted the deficit of job loss among males (9,689 versus –687 jobs,
respectively) to post a positive gain at the County level (6,942). Currently, equal
numbers of men and women are in the resident workforce, approximately 232,000 each;
the gender gap rapidly narrowed from a 44,000 difference in 1977 to 18,600 in 1987.
Any additional increase in women’s work force participation rates will result in more
females than male residents employed.

White-collar defines the resident workforce

In Montgomery County, four out of seven employed residents are either

executive/managers or professionals. An incredible 36 percent of employed residents
are in professional occupations such as teachers, scientists, or doctors. As perspective,
only 13 percent of workers are professionals in the United States. Another one fifth of
employed residents are executives or managers, twice the percentage found in the
nation’s workforce. With this block of white-collar employees, no wonder educational
attainment figures and household incomes in Montgomery County are so high.

incomes of $100,000 or more. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s share
of households with incomes of $100,000 or more is at an all-time record high. In 1996,
8.2 percent of the United State’s households - or 1 in 12 - reported total income of at
least $100,000. In Montgomery County -- 2 out of 7 households exceed $100,000 -- a
household is three times more likely than the national norm to have such high income.

Montgomery County’s lofty household incomes are fueled by high paying jobs,
rewarding the well-educated resident work force in a variety of professional and
managerial occupations. Behind today’s record level of affluence are the dual-income
couples of the baby boom generation reaching their peak-earning years. Of the 85,200
County households with incomes of $100,000 or more, 68 percent are dual-income
couples similar, to 65 percent across the nation. The rising economic fortunes of dual-
income households should boost household income for another ten years.
