LP Problems
LP Problems
, makes two products, tables & chairs, which must be processed through assembly &
finishing departments. Assembly has 60 hours available per week; finishing can handle up to 48 hours of
work a week. Manufacturing one table requires 4 hours in assembly & 2 hours in finishing. Each chair
requires 2 hours in assembly & 4 hours in finishing. If profit is $8 per table & $6 per chair, the problem is to
determine the best possible combination of tables & chairs to produce & sell in order to realize the
maximum profit.
2. Sue's Crackpot Pottery Company is a one-person operation (headed by Sue) set up to manufacture small
items of handcrafted pottery. Sue has designed two products, a turned plant pot & a free-sculpted
ashtray. The plant pot is turned on a pottery wheel, which she rents from local coop, & the ashtray must
be made entirely by hand. Sue estimates that in the upcoming week, the pottery wheel will be made
available a maximum of 30 machine hours, & the time she would have too spend working in her business
is limited to 50 labor hours. It takes 1 1/4 hours to make a plant pot & 2 hours to make the ashtray. Her
profit on each plant pot is P5, and her profit on each ashtray is P12. Based on past demand, Sue projected
sales of ashtray to be a maximum of 15, while sales of pots are not restricted. Her problem is to determine
how many units of each product should make to be sold in the upcoming week.
3. A small candy shop is preparing for the holiday season. The owner must decide how many bags of deluxe
mix & how many bags of standard mix of Peanut/Raisin Delite to put up. The deluxe mix has 2/3 lbs. of
raisins & 1/3 lbs. of peanuts, & the standard mix has 1/2lbs. raisins & 1/2 lbs. peanuts per bag. The shop
has 90 lbs. of raisins & 60 lbs. of peanuts to work with.
A peanut costs $0.60/lbs. & Raisins costs $1.50/lbs. The deluxe mix will sell for $2.90/lbs., & the
standard mix will sell for $2.55/lbs. The owner estimates that no more than 110 bags of one type can be
sold.
If the goal is to maximize profits, how many bags of each type should be prepared? What is the
expected profit?
4. The Electrocomp Corp. manufactures two electrical products: air conditioners & large fans. The assembly
process for each is similar in that both require a certain amount of wiring & drilling. Each air conditioner
takes 3 hours of wiring & 2 hours of drilling. Each fan must go through 2 hours of wiring & 1 hour of
drilling. During the next production period, 240 hours of wiring time are available, & up to 140 hours of
drilling time may be used. Each air conditioner sold yields a profit of $25. Each fan assembled maybe sold
for a profit of $15. Formulate this LP production mix situation to find the best combination of air
conditioners & fans that yield the highest profit.
5. Electrocomp's management realizes that it forgot to include two critical constraints (see problem 1). In
particular, management decides that to ensure an adequate supply of air conditioners for a contract, at
least 20 air conditioners should be manufactured. Since Electrocomp incurred an oversupply of fans the
preceding period, management also insists that no more than 80 fans are produced during this production
period. Resolve this product mix problem to find the new optimal solution.
6. The dean of the Western College of Business must plan the school's course offerings for the fall semester.
The student demands make it necessary to offer al least 30 undergraduate & 20 graduate courses in the
term. Faculty contracts also dictates that at least 60 courses be offered in total. Each undergraduate
course taught costs the college an average of $2,500 in faculty wages, while each of graduate courses
costs $3,000. How many undergraduate & graduate courses should be taught in fall so that faculty salaries
are kept at a minimum.
7. The Sweet Smell Fertilizer Co. markets bags of manure labeled “not less that 60 pounds dry weight". The
package manure is a combination of compost & sewage wastes. To provide good quality fertilizer, each
bag should contain at least 30 pounds of compost but no more than 40 pounds of sewage. Each pound of
compost costs Sweet Smell 5cents & each pound of sewage costs 4cents. Use LP to determine the least
costs blend of compost & sewage in each bag.
Jeff Smith, the Director of Marketing at Dimensions, has promised customers the firm will make at
least two tables and at least four chairs per week.
It costs $20 per unit to manufacture a table & $8 per unit to manufacture a chair.
