EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ITS IMPACT ON JOB

SATISFACTION:
A CORRELATIONAL STUDY

INTRODUCTION

In this era of globalization where there is high cultural, scientific, economic and social exchange,
the success of a person depends on many personal factors. This includes attitude, parental
support, good education, social network, financial support and so on. Even with all of these,
there can be failure in success. When the root causes for this was searched, it points towards
Emotional Intelligence (EI). It is the ability to manage emotions intelligently. [ CITATION Abi12 \l
1033 ] In the present world, a person who is having good interrelationships, mutual understanding
and greater productivity at workplace has greater demand.

Job satisfaction is one of the fundamental and interesting subjects in modern management so that
the decrease of job satisfaction in employees will cause huge costs for organizations and on the
contrary its presence will develop organizations to a large extent. Job satisfaction is an integral
component of organizational climate and an important element in management employee
relationship. It is the positive emotional state that occurs when a person’s job seems to fulfill
important job values provided; these values are compatible with ones needs. [ CITATION Abi12 \l

Emotional intelligence and Job satisfaction are two concepts of high interest in the modern work
environment. They serve as a competitive edge in personal and organizational life.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

An attempt to find out the impact of emotional intelligence on job satisfaction. So, based on the
result of the study, the management can find necessary solutions to control or eliminate the cause
of job dissatisfaction. The suggestions from the employees can be collected during the study and
those suggestions will help the management to make improvements in the organization which
will ultimately improve the employee’s job satisfaction.

OBJECTIVES

 To study the significance of emotional intelligence and its impact on job satisfaction.
 To find out the co-relation between job satisfaction and emotional intelligence.
 To find out the satisfaction level of employees.
CONCEPTUAL DEFINITION

Emotional Intelligence

A term created by two researchers – Peter Salavoy and John Mayer – and popularized by Daniel
Goleman in his 1996 book of the same name.

He defined EI or EQ as the ability to:

● Recognize, understand and manage our own emotions


● Recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others
Job Satisfaction

“The feelings a worker has about his or her job or job experiences in relation to previous
experiences, current expectations, or available alternatives” (Balzer et al., 1997, p. 10)

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION

Emotional Intelligence

It refers to the emotional state of the employees working in each department. In this study it can
be his/her emotions or the emotions influenced by others. It includes

Job Satisfaction

In this study job satisfaction refers to the satisfaction of the employees working in the
organization. The satisfaction criteria taken in the category are salary, compensation packages,
working hours and leave policy.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

 Is there a relation between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction?


 What is the job satisfaction level of employees?

HYPOTHESIS

 H1- There is a significant relation between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction.
 H0 - There is no significant relation between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE

There is a lot of work pressure on employees in terms of workload, long working hours in
handling customers under stress, which affects their job satisfaction level as a result; emotional
intelligence plays an important role in this situation by managing and controlling their emotions,
which may lead to higher level of job satisfaction.

 [ CITATION Tal07 \l 1033 ] conducted a study on police officers and reported an


insignificant relationship between emotional intelligence and job satisfaction. He threw a
light on the relationship between stress management components of emotional
intelligence and found a weak negative correlation, while a positive relationship was
found between adjustment and general mood components of emotional intelligence and
job satisfaction.
 Jamaluddin et al. (2015) have explored the relationship between emotional intelligence
and job satisfaction among the 357 employees of established factories in Malaysia. The
study revealed that emotional intelligence plays an important role on job satisfaction,
which could increase the company productivity.
 [CITATION Mar16 \l 1033 ] studied the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and
Organizational Commitment with Job Satisfaction among 125 Staff of Ebne Sina
Hospital by Using the NEO Personality Inventory and Minnesota job satisfaction
questionnaire. The findings of this showed that there is a significant positive relationship
between emotional intelligence and organizational commitment with job satisfaction
among the staff of Ebne Sina hospital. It is also found that age and education level of
staff has impact on emotional intelligence.
 [ CITATION RRa17 \l 1033 ] conducted a study on “Impact of Emotional Intelligence on job
satisfaction in everyday banking solution, Chennai” and revealed that Emotional
Intelligence and Job Satisfaction are strongly correlated with each other. The study
emphasized the need for proper training to employees so that their emotional quotient can
be enhanced and also help in developing their emotional intelligence skills.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH POPULATION

The population of the study is the available units for undertaking research. Here the population
of the study is the employees working in an organization.

SAMPLING

The sampling method will be used in this study is convenience sampling.


Convenience sampling (also known as availability sampling) is a specific type of non-probability
sampling method that relies on data collection from population members who are conveniently
available to participate in study.

SAMPLE SIZE

It is not possible for a researcher to study the whole population. So, a sampling unit of 100
employees is selected on the basis of convenience sampling.

METHODS FOR DATA COLLECTION

Methods for data collection are the ways in which the researcher collects data for the study. In
this particular study, the method for collecting data is quantitative method. We can find
emotional intelligence and job satisfaction through questionnaire.

Tools used:

 Emotional Intelligence Scale: The scale developed by Prof. N.K Chadha and Dr. Dalip


Singh (2003) was used to assess the Emotional Intelligence of the employees. 
 Job Satisfaction Scale developed by Dr. Aman Singh and Dr. A.T Sharma.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research design is a series of advanced decisions that taken together comprise a master plan or
model for the conduct of an investigation. So, research design provides a framework of plan for
the study, which guides the collection, measurement, analysis and interpretation of the data. The
research carried out here is descriptive in nature. Descriptive research provides data about the
population or universe being studied. It can describe what, where, why, where and how.

INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION CRITERIA

The study will be conducted in a particular organization and the middle level and higher level
employees will be taken. Employees working in contract basis, employees under training,
employees under notice period and administrative staffs will be excluded.
