Cam Profile
Cam Profile
MACHINE ELEMENTS
(ME138P)
Simple Harmonic Motion of a Cam
• Its construction is based on the idea that the projection on
the diameter of a point P moving along a circle with
constant velocity represents a simple harmonic motion.
Example
• A follower is to move outward with simple harmonic
motion during 180 degrees of cam rotation, is to dwell for
the next 60 degrees, and is to return with simple
harmonic motion during the last 120 degrees of cam
rotation. Construct the cam displacement diagram.
Disk Cam with Offset Roller Follower
• The centerline of the
follower does not pass
through the center of
the camshaft.
• When the offset is to
the right, the cam
should rotate counter-
clockwise. When the
offset is to the left, the
cam must rotate
clockwise.
Disk Cam with Offset Roller Follower
• Base circle radius-
distance from the axis
of rotation of the cam
to the axis of the roller
where it is in its lowest
position
• Offset radius- the
perpendicular distance
from the center of the
cam to an extension of
the centerline of the
follower
How to construct the cam profile?
1. Draw the base circle using the dimension given in the problem.
2. Draw the offset circle based from the instruction given in the problem.
3. Divide the offset circle into 12 equal angles. This would correspond to the
time intervals used in the cam displacement diagram.
4. From the intersection of the base circle and the follower centerline, locate
follower positions (1’,2’,3’,etc.) for each angle based from the cam
displacement diagram.
5. Draw tangent lines at each position on the offset circle. This will represent
the position of the follower centerline as the cam is held stationary and the
frame and follower are rotated counterclockwise about the cam.
6. With center O, draw arcs from 1’,2’,3’, etc. The arcs must intersect with
the corresponding tangents that were constructed from the previous item.
7. These points of intersection are marked as 1”, 2”, 3”, etc., Connecting
these points by a smooth curve shows the pitch profile.
8. Construct arcs with radii equal to the roller radius using the points from the
previous item as the centers.
9. A smooth curve tangent to these arcs will give you the cam profile.
Pressure angles
• Defined as the angle 𝜙, which the
common normal for the cam and follower
makes with the path of the follower.
• For good performance, pressure angles
should not exceed 30 degrees.
• Pressure angles can be reduced by:
1. Increasing the base circle diameter.
2. Decreasing total rise of the follower.
3. Increasing cam rotation for a given
follower displacement.
4. Changing the type of the follower motion
5. Changing the follower offset.
• The path of the follower is represented
by the tangent lines constructed.
