CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The significance of popular media upon the behavior of people has placed our civilization

in context by providing several characteristics. The media form of television is the most

widespread and prominent medium. And also a leading ground of data and amusement. It molds

civilization’s outlook of the world. As a constantly growing rate of teenagers who watch reality

programs as a routine, they will possibly be afflicted in several ways.[ CITATION Vij12 \l 1033 ]

People presently have an expanded variety to watch programs than the past in choosing to

consume their time with television. With the outbreak of cable television, several different types

of programs have begun competing for viewers. A specific genre that has quickly achieved fame

among other channels in the past few years is reality television shows. [ CITATION Kri09 \l 1033 ]

Reality-based programs are commonly labelled as “unscripted shows” in popular media

and are definitely controlling our current television prime time. It is composed of shows that

depict individuals as themselves in a slew of differing situations. Several reality shows are about

competing; alternate shows depict the day-to-day lives of celebrities. It has become extremely

widespread, thus leaving very little undeniability that teenagers are probably going to watch

several examples of this genre of shows, even those with normal viewing tendencies. It may let

think about the potential effects of this. [ CITATION KEV17 \l 1033 ]

The way networks portray reality television shows can have an impact on the youth.

According to Lisa Anne Joniak (2007), reality television acquired proficiency in viewership and

programming. It uses real people, playing themselves and not characters. Networks produce
several reality shows because it gains lofty viewers for low production cost. Along with its

expansion in programming and rating, reality television has turned cumbersome and disparate.

As a result, reality television is likely to be noticed in pop culture.

This type of movement seemingly began with the program Big Brother, a competitive

reality program wherein everyday people can be transformed into an almost-instant celebrity. In

the Philippines, the program Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) is rather famous and highly viewed by

people of varying age ranges. The contestants of the program are shown to partake in activities

which makes them do whatever it takes to come out victorious and become popular. [ CITATION

It is common knowledge that teenagers are more prone to copying and accustoming one’s

demeanor into themselves because it is easy to link what they feel with what is presented on

television. Although the shows within the reality genre are considered to be greatly amusing, it is

crucial to be knowledgeable about the themes and principles that these programs often display.
