Usability Test Report
Usability Test Report
The following memo describes our Unit 3 Instruction project. We have divided this into
separate sections including objectives, methods, results, and conclusions.
For Unit 3 our group chose to write a set of instructions to make Turkey and Gravy. The reason
we chose this was because we all enjoy cooking and the Thanksgiving holiday is coming up. Our
target audience for our instructions was college aged, inexperienced cooks. We chose this
audience because it would be beneficial for them to have an easy set of instructions to follow
for their first turkey cooking experience.
For our instructions our objectives were to make a set of instructions that were easy to follow
for any cook but specifically, inexperienced young cooks. We chose this because we felt that it
would be valuable to us because it would teach us about cooking turkeys which is something
none of us had much experience with. It would also help us with the upcoming holiday.
We created two independent tests to check the usability of our instructions. Some of our
objectives for the test were to check the clarity and simplicity of the directions. We wanted to
test an experienced and inexperienced cook to see the similarities and make sure that it is
usable for all cooks, and more importantly our target audience.
The draft of our instructions had all of the instructions we would include in our final draft but
none of the pictures we intend to include. Our draft contains one preparation step and
nineteen instruction steps. We also have an ingredients used section, utensils used section, and
key terms list. These will be the main parts of our final draft as well.
The first test was completed by a 29 year old male who had no cooking experience. We felt that
he was a good candidate because he was a part of our target audience and had few cooking
skills. The second test was completed by a 50 year old female who has many years of cooking
experience. We felt that she was a good candidate because she knows what a good recipe
should look like and therefore would know what suggestions to give to improve our
instructions.
The locations of the tests performed were done in each of our candidates͛ home kitchens. This
was suitable because most people prefer to cook in the comfort of their own home and
because it is a lengthy process. This would allow inexperienced cooks to become familiar with
their kitchen unit, utensils, and cooking in general. Letting experienced cooks cook in their own
kitchen would be beneficial because they would be able to focus on the usability of the
instructions instead of the kitchen.
We asked our testers to follow our instructions to make a turkey with gravy. We also asked
them to make suggestions on how to improve the clarity of our instructions. We provided our
candidates with a copy of the instructions and gave them permission to write comments and
suggest changes. We plan to use this information to improve our instructions.
Both of our testers were able to make the turkey and gravy successfully. Our experienced cook
was able to follow the instructions with no difficulties. She suggested adding specific amounts
of ingredients to steps 5 and 15. She also suggested clarifying whether to use warm or cold
water when thawing and cleaning out the turkey. Our inexperienced cook had several
suggestions on ways to clarify the instruction such as further explaining steps 1, 2, 3, 4, and 15.
He also made placement and grammar suggestions on steps 9, 12, and 17. Overall, these
suggestions indicated that we needed to elaborate on steps mostly for our inexperienced cooks
since they are our main target audience.
We took all of our testers͛ suggestions into consideration and made changes to our instructions
based on their comments. We specified whether to use warm or cold water in steps 1 and 3. In
step 2 we added some possibilities of what you can do with the giblets removed from the
turkey. We gave the reader instructions on how to use the turkey injector in step 9. In step 15
we added specific amounts of water and flour needed. We combined step 15 and 17. We also
combined 18 and 19. This cut down the steps from 19 to 17. Lastly, we went through and added
grammar and placement changes.
