1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification

This specification describes the minimum requirements for packaged diesel engine
generators.

B. Related Specifications and Documents

1. Work in this specification shall be coordinated with Specification MQ-SP-E-


6000: General Requirements – Electrical Materials and Equipment and
Specification MQ-SP-M-4028 – Packaged Diesel Engine Generators.

1.3 Quality Assurance

A. General

1. Material and parts of the generator set shall be new and unused. Each
component shall be of current manufacture, supplied by a firm regularly engaged
in the production of such equipment.

2. Equipment described in the following sections is the basis of the specification.


Substitution of materials of the same function and performance must be
approved by Buyer. All acceptable substitutions shall be noted only by addenda
to the specification, before bid. If Supplier furnishes equipment other than that
specified, Supplier is responsible for all engineering and additional costs
resulting from the substitution.

B. Qualifications

1. The generator and control manufacturers shall have distributors authorized to do


warranty fulfillment. A listing of authorized distributors in the geographic area
of generator-set operation shall be submitted along with bid. The contractual
agreements between all manufacturers and authorized distributors must have
been in effect 6 months before bid opening.

2. The Supplier shall have full responsibility for the performance of the entire
generator set and its accessories; Supplier shall also have the engine
manufacturer's assigned warranty fulfillment authorization.

3. The system shall be built, tested, and shipped by a manufacturer who has been
regularly engaged in the production of generators for a minimum of 10 years.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 General

The Supplier shall be responsible for providing a complete diesel engine generator package.
The Supplier shall coordinate all generator requirements with the diesel engine manufacturer.

2.2 Materials

1. Generator

a. Insulation shall be suitable for voltage and temperatures specified. As a


minimum, Class B insulation shall be provided. The generator shall be
capable of continuous operation at the limiting observable temperature rise,
as specified in IEEE C50.13.

b. The stator frame, together with easily removable end enclosures, with
associated ventilating system shall enclose the generator. The frame shall
be of sufficient strength to support the armature laminations and coils.

c. Generator windings shall be suitable for wye connection with both ends of
each winding brought out to terminals, in an accessible location, for Buyer's
connection. Either end of the windings shall be suitable for phase terminals;
leads shall be separated and adequately braced. Refer to the datasheet for
specific connection requirements.

d. The armature laminations shall be constructed of high-grade steel, suitably


secured to the stator frame. Spacers shall be provided at intervals along the
length of the core to form radial ventilating ducts. The laminations and
spacers shall be securely clamped together to prevent undue vibration and
noise.

e. Armature coils shall be form-wound and interchangeable. They shall be


assembled in open-type slots in the armature core and shall be securely held
by insulating wedges.

f. The generator rotor shall be made of steel. Radial slots to receive the field
coils shall be machined in the rotor body.

g. The generator shaft shall be accurately finished throughout its entire length,
and shall be ground at bearing and sealing surfaces and adjacent to the
bearing surfaces, to permit vibration measurements.

h. The generator rotor shall be statically and dynamically balanced. Rotor


balance shall be such that during the shop test of the assembled generator
while operating at rated speed, the double amplitude of vibration, including
mechanical runout in any plane measured on the shaft adjacent and relative
to each radial bearing, shall not exceed 1-1/2 mils. A 1/4 mil maximum
shaft electrical runout, as measured on test, may be deducted from measured
vibration. Vibration readings taken on the housings are not acceptable. At
the overspeed condition, the double amplitude of vibration shall not exceed
2 mils.

i. Bearings shall be insulated to prevent shaft current circulation.

j. Radial probe provision shall be located such that the probe shall sense an
unplated ground surface having no more than the mechanical runout and
electrical runout allowed in this specification. Probe provisions shall be
located such that oil spill is minimized on change out. Probe provision shall
be suitable for external mounting.

k. Probes shall be furnished installed in removable probe holders. Each holder


shall be shouldered so that probe location is maintained when the probe is
removed and reinstalled. The holder shall be mechanically locked to the
bearing housing, and the probe shall be mechanically locked in the holder to
prevent loosening in service.

l. Readout equipment for shaft vibration and position, whether remote or local,
shall be supplied by Buyer. Supplier shall be responsible for recommending
alarm and shutdown settings.

2. Exciter

a. The exciter shall be of the static, rotating brushless, or comparable self-


ventilating type, mounted on or coupled to the main generator shaft external
to the bearing opposite the drive end.

b. Generators supplied with rotating brushless excitation shall be furnished


with an auxiliary pilot exciter PMG (Permanent Magnet Generator) type,
shaft mounted, outboard of the brushless main exciter.

c. Exciters of the rotating brushless type shall be ventilated by means of


cooling air received from the main generator, circulated through the exciter,
and returned to the main generator.

a. The voltage regulator shall be a completely solid-state voltage regulator for


control of the generator voltage by control of the exciter field. No vacuum
tubes or electromechanical relays shall be used in the voltage regulator.

b. The voltage regulator system shall include voltage transformers and voltages
adjusting rheostat, as required for proper operation.

4. Space Heaters

Electric space heaters shall be provided to generator and exciter housings to


prevent condensation when not in service. The supply voltage shall be specified
in the datasheet.

2.3 Design Criteria

A. Generator

1. Generator shall be capable of continuous duty service and shall operate


successfully at rated kVA, frequency, and power factor at any voltage not more
than 5 percent above or below rated voltage.

2. The generator shall be capable of withstanding 20 percent overspeed without


mechanical injury.

3. Generator rotation shall be dictated by the driver rotation. Phase sequence shall
be 1, 2, 3, with counterclockwise phase rotation.

4. The generator shall be designed with limiting values for sub-transient reactance
and short-circuit ratio. Refer to Buyer's datasheets for specific limiting
requirements (if any).

5. The generator armature and field winding short-time thermal requirements shall
be as specified in IEEE C50.13.

6. The generator rotor short-time thermal requirements for unbalanced faults shall
be as specified in IEEE C50.13.

7. In addition to the mechanical requirements for short circuits as defined in IEEE


C50.13, the generator, voltage regulator, and exciter system shall be capable of
sustaining at least 300 percent rated generator current for 10 seconds, should a 3-
phase, symmetrical short circuit occur at the generator terminals.

8. The requirements for continuous current unbalance of the generator shall be as


defined in IEEE C50.13.

9. The generator shall be designed to provide access for shaft measurement by a


hand-held probe adjacent to the coupling end bearing.

B. Exciter

1. Exciter shall be sized to provide 20 percent capacity in excess of that required to


supply the field excitation of the generator when the generator is operated at
5 percent above normal rated kVA output, at rated power factor, and at normal
voltage without exceeding rated temperature rise.

2. The main exciter response ratio shall not be less than 0.5.

3. The exciter current rating shall be guaranteed to be at least equal to the actual
excitation required by the generator at rated power factor and load when
operating at 5 percent above rated voltage.

4. For static excitation systems, a comparable auxiliary pilot excitation system shall
be furnished to facilitate generator operation and startup.

5. The rotating brushless exciter, if mounted or coupled to the generator shaft, shall
be capable of withstanding 20 percent overspeed without mechanical injury.

C. Controls, Protective Devices, and Instrumentation

1. Instrumentation supplied by generator Supplier shall be as outlined in Buyer's


datasheets. Additional instruments (if any) to be furnished by the generator
Supplier beyond normal generator control requirements are also noted in Buyer's
datasheets.

2. Supplier furnished instrumentation shall be subject to Buyer's specific


concurrence and adherence to Buyer's acceptable Supplier's list.

3. The instrument panel furnished by Buyer shall contain, as a minimum, all


instrumentation in accordance with the requirements and concurrence of the
driver Supplier.

4. Duplication of instruments, or the use of a separate generator control panel in


conjunction with the main local instrument panel, shall be mutually agreed upon
among Buyer, driver Manufacturer, and generator Manufacturer.

5. For any safety or protective alarms specified to be furnished by the generator


Supplier, the alarm system shall be the failsafe type utilizing field alarm and
shutdown circuits that are closed and energized when the generating system is in
its normal operation mode.

6. Alarm and shutdown switches shall be suitable for operation on both AC


(Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current), and shall have a minimum
current rating of 5 amps at 125 VDC (Volts Direct Current) or VAC (Volts
Alternating Current). Variations to this minimum rating may be required by a
particular service. (The intent is to provide the highest rating possible,
especially for standby pump start and shutdown switches.)

7. Parts in contact with lube oil shall be 316 stainless steel or approved substitutes.

8. Alarm and shutdown switches shall be in separate individual cases. SPDT


(Single-Pole, Double-Throw) switches shall be used.

9. Refer to the datasheets for area classification and electrical requirements.

10. A separate junction box or boxes shall be provided on the generator enclosure
for connections to space heaters, temperature detectors, thermocouples, and
humidity detector, if any. Buyer's leads shall enter the junction box from below.

11. Flow indicators shall be furnished in the atmospheric oil-drain return line from
each bearing.

12. Steel nonrestrictive flow indicators shall be used for all atmospheric drain lines,
whether atmospheric or pressurized.

13. Each flow indicator shall be of the bull's-eye type and shall be installed with its
bull's-eye glass preferably in a vertical plane to facilitate viewing the flow of oil
through the particular line.

2.4 Inspection And Tests

A. Inspection

See specification MQ-SP-E-6000 for inspection requirements.

B. Tests

1. Tests required in this specification shall be carried out in the generator Supplier's
shop. Buyer and Client's representatives, as well as the driver Supplier, reserve
the right to witness tests.

2. Equipment shall be tested in accordance with mutually agreed upon test


procedures before order. The final test procedures shall be submitted by
Supplier for Buyer's review at least 60 days before notification of test.

3. Electrical test procedures shall be based upon the latest revision of the IEEE Test
Procedures for Synchronous Machines, Publication 115.

4. The following tests shall be performed on the generator, exciter, and auxiliaries:

a. Generator open-circuit saturation.

b. Generator short-circuit saturation.

c. Insulation resistance of field and armature.

d. Measurement of cold resistance of armature and field windings.

e. Measurement of rotor impedance.

f. Generator phase-sequence and voltage balance.

g. Short-circuit tests at reduced voltage to determine reactance and time


constants. These tests, or certified test reports on a duplicate generator, are
required.

h. Measurement of segregated losses. These tests, or certified test reports on a


duplicate generator, are required.

i. Temperature tests. These tests, or certified test reports on a duplicate


generator, are required.

j. Dielectric tests. The dielectric tests described in Paragraph 9.3 of ANSI


C50.10 shall be performed on the generator.

k. Generator rotor balance. Rotor is to be statically and dynamically balanced


at a minimum of 600 rpm (revolutions per minute).

l. Exciter rotor balance, if applicable. Exciter is to be balanced in the same


manner as the generator rotor.

m. Mechanical run of generator and, if applicable, exciter. The generator shall


be mechanically run at rated speed for a minimum of 4 hours.

n. During the mechanical running test, mechanical operation of all equipment


shall function satisfactorily. Bearing oil pressures and temperature levels of
both feed and drains shall be as agreed upon before test. The test readings
shall not start until all such parameters have been stabilized. Oil pressures
and temperatures shall be monitored and recorded.

o. The job or contract non-contacting probes shall be installed for the test and
used to determine the vibration levels. Supplier shall be expected to prove
the compatibility of the probe and test stand readout equipment.

p. Generator run at trip and overspeed. The generator shall be run with the
generator unexcited, if possible, at 110 percent and 120 percent of normal
operating speed. After the unit has stabilized at these conditions, readings
shall be recorded for vibration, oil pressure, and temperature for each
operating condition.

q. Hydrostatic test of piping. Piping shall be hydrostatically tested to 1-1/2


times the design pressure.

r. Load test. The load tests shall include full load test for 4 hours with the
following:

(1) A load bank of adequate capacity as specified in the datasheet.


(2) Refer also to the PO and datasheets for additional requirements.

2.5 Identification And Tagging

A. Identification

1. Nameplates and rotation arrows on the generator are required, and shall be
stainless steel or monel attached by pins made of similar material and located for
ease of visibility.

2. The following data, as a minimum, shall be stamped on the nameplate:

a. Manufacturer's name
b. Serial number
c. Buyer's equipment item number
d. Voltage
e. Output kVA
f. Output kW
g. RPM
h. Frequency
i. Temperature rise of armature
j. Temperature rise of field
k. Number of phases
l. Power factor
m. Excitation voltage
n. PO number

B. Tagging

See specification MQ-SP-E-6000 for tagging requirements.

2.6 Preparation For Shipment

A. General

1. Each unit shall be suitably prepared for the shipment specified and for outdoor
storage for a period of at least 6 months, in a manner requiring no disassembly
before operation.

2. Supplier shall be solely responsible for the adequacy of the preparation for
shipment provisions employed, with respect to materials and application.

3. Shipment preparation procedures shall be submitted to Buyer for this


concurrence in accordance with the schedule noted in Supplier Data
Commitment form attached to the formal PO. Such procedures shall be mutually
agreed upon before shipment.

4. When specified on the datasheets, the generator, exciter, and accessory


equipment shall be shipped in waterproof boxes. The number of boxes shall be
minimized, consistent with safe shipping procedures.

5. Equipment shall be packed, securely anchored (skid-mounted when required),


and weather protected for the shipment method called for in the PO. Separate,
loose, or spare parts shall be boxed and each part individually protected as
required. Each container shall be marked both inside and outside with the
equipment number and service for which the parts are intended.

6. Each container shall also include complete Bills of Material identifying each
part. In some instances, such as instruments, specific tagging shall be required.

7. Equipment shall be free from water before shipment preparation.

8. Bearing assemblies shall be fully protected from rusting and entry of moisture
and dirt.

9. One complete set of installation, operation, and maintenance instructions shall be


packed with the equipment.

10. Preparation for export shipment is considered special and, if such is required,
shall be done by Supplier in Supplier's shop following mutually agreed upon
procedures.

B. Internal Preservation

1. Spray or fog machine internals with a suitable preservative while the generator
rotor is being turned slowly in its bearings. Spray thoroughly through all access
openings in sufficient quantity to ensure coverage of all internal parts. Leave
drains open during spraying to prevent liquid buildup within the generator.

2. Spray internals of bearing housings with circulating oil. Blind flange or plug all
bearing housing openings using standard blind flanges and gaskets. Fill the
bearing housing sump with circulating oil to a level about 75 mm from the
bottom of the sump before installing the bearing housing cover.

3. Desiccant bags must be tied securely to flange covers to ensure that they are
removed when the cover is removed.

C. External Preservation

1. Immediately upon completion of all tests and inspection, all exposed machined
surfaces including soleplates and bolting shall be coated with a rust preventative.

2. In order to provide a clean epoxy grouting surface, the bottom of all baseplates
and soleplates shall be sandblasted to near white metal and immediately covered
with epoxy paint.

3. Solid steel plugs shall be used instead of plastic plugs for any part that is
pressurized during startup or operation.

4. Open ends of tubes and pipe shall be capped for protection (taping is not
adequate).

5. Flanged openings shall be provided with full size steel closures of 3/16 of an
inch (5mm) minimum thickness with full face rubber gaskets and at least 4 full
diameter bolts. A rust inhibitor shall be applied to all flange faces.
