j. Radial probe provision shall be located such that the probe shall sense an
unplated ground surface having no more than the mechanical runout and
electrical runout allowed in this specification. Probe provisions shall be
located such that oil spill is minimized on change out. Probe provision shall
be suitable for external mounting.
l. Readout equipment for shaft vibration and position, whether remote or local,
shall be supplied by Buyer. Supplier shall be responsible for recommending
alarm and shutdown settings.
2. Exciter
3. Voltage Regulator

b. The voltage regulator system shall include voltage transformers and voltages
adjusting rheostat, as required for proper operation.
4. Space Heaters
A. Generator
3. Generator rotation shall be dictated by the driver rotation. Phase sequence shall
be 1, 2, 3, with counterclockwise phase rotation.
4. The generator shall be designed with limiting values for sub-transient reactance
and short-circuit ratio. Refer to Buyer's datasheets for specific limiting
requirements (if any).
5. The generator armature and field winding short-time thermal requirements shall
be as specified in IEEE C50.13.
6. The generator rotor short-time thermal requirements for unbalanced faults shall
be as specified in IEEE C50.13.
B. Exciter
2. The main exciter response ratio shall not be less than 0.5.
3. The exciter current rating shall be guaranteed to be at least equal to the actual
excitation required by the generator at rated power factor and load when
operating at 5 percent above rated voltage.
4. For static excitation systems, a comparable auxiliary pilot excitation system shall
be furnished to facilitate generator operation and startup.
5. The rotating brushless exciter, if mounted or coupled to the generator shaft, shall
be capable of withstanding 20 percent overspeed without mechanical injury.
7. Parts in contact with lube oil shall be 316 stainless steel or approved substitutes.
10. A separate junction box or boxes shall be provided on the generator enclosure
for connections to space heaters, temperature detectors, thermocouples, and
humidity detector, if any. Buyer's leads shall enter the junction box from below.
11. Flow indicators shall be furnished in the atmospheric oil-drain return line from
each bearing.
12. Steel nonrestrictive flow indicators shall be used for all atmospheric drain lines,
whether atmospheric or pressurized.
13. Each flow indicator shall be of the bull's-eye type and shall be installed with its
bull's-eye glass preferably in a vertical plane to facilitate viewing the flow of oil
through the particular line.
A. Inspection
B. Tests
1. Tests required in this specification shall be carried out in the generator Supplier's
shop. Buyer and Client's representatives, as well as the driver Supplier, reserve
the right to witness tests.
3. Electrical test procedures shall be based upon the latest revision of the IEEE Test
Procedures for Synchronous Machines, Publication 115.
4. The following tests shall be performed on the generator, exciter, and auxiliaries:
o. The job or contract non-contacting probes shall be installed for the test and
used to determine the vibration levels. Supplier shall be expected to prove
the compatibility of the probe and test stand readout equipment.
p. Generator run at trip and overspeed. The generator shall be run with the
generator unexcited, if possible, at 110 percent and 120 percent of normal
operating speed. After the unit has stabilized at these conditions, readings
shall be recorded for vibration, oil pressure, and temperature for each
operating condition.
r. Load test. The load tests shall include full load test for 4 hours with the
following:
A. Identification
1. Nameplates and rotation arrows on the generator are required, and shall be
stainless steel or monel attached by pins made of similar material and located for
ease of visibility.

b. Serial number
c. Buyer's equipment item number
d. Voltage
e. Output kVA
f. Output kW
g. RPM
h. Frequency
i. Temperature rise of armature
j. Temperature rise of field
k. Number of phases
l. Power factor
m. Excitation voltage
n. PO number

B. Tagging
A. General
1. Each unit shall be suitably prepared for the shipment specified and for outdoor
storage for a period of at least 6 months, in a manner requiring no disassembly
before operation.
2. Supplier shall be solely responsible for the adequacy of the preparation for
shipment provisions employed, with respect to materials and application.
6. Each container shall also include complete Bills of Material identifying each
part. In some instances, such as instruments, specific tagging shall be required.
8. Bearing assemblies shall be fully protected from rusting and entry of moisture
and dirt.
10. Preparation for export shipment is considered special and, if such is required,
shall be done by Supplier in Supplier's shop following mutually agreed upon
procedures.

B. Internal Preservation
1. Spray or fog machine internals with a suitable preservative while the generator
rotor is being turned slowly in its bearings. Spray thoroughly through all access
openings in sufficient quantity to ensure coverage of all internal parts. Leave
drains open during spraying to prevent liquid buildup within the generator.
2. Spray internals of bearing housings with circulating oil. Blind flange or plug all
bearing housing openings using standard blind flanges and gaskets. Fill the
bearing housing sump with circulating oil to a level about 75 mm from the
bottom of the sump before installing the bearing housing cover.
3. Desiccant bags must be tied securely to flange covers to ensure that they are
removed when the cover is removed.
C. External Preservation
1. Immediately upon completion of all tests and inspection, all exposed machined
surfaces including soleplates and bolting shall be coated with a rust preventative.
2. In order to provide a clean epoxy grouting surface, the bottom of all baseplates
and soleplates shall be sandblasted to near white metal and immediately covered
with epoxy paint.
3. Solid steel plugs shall be used instead of plastic plugs for any part that is
pressurized during startup or operation.
4. Open ends of tubes and pipe shall be capped for protection (taping is not
adequate).
5. Flanged openings shall be provided with full size steel closures of 3/16 of an
inch (5mm) minimum thickness with full face rubber gaskets and at least 4 full
diameter bolts. A rust inhibitor shall be applied to all flange faces.
