Thesis DOST

This document outlines a thesis proposal for designing a glass cleaning device for elevated windows. The device aims to provide a safer alternative to manual cleaning methods. The objectives are to develop an effective motion transmission, determine motor specifications, and evaluate cleaning speed. The methodology will include design/sizing using CAD software, weight/motion analysis, building a prototype, and evaluating surface cleanliness. The goal is an easy, efficient, and safe solution for high-rise window cleaning.

Glass Cleaning Device for Elevated Windows

Title of Thesis
Brief Rationale
Most maintenance work in exterior window of high-rise buildings are carried out by human
labor. The workers use a cable-driven mechanism that enables them to reach high elevations. However,
cleaning exterior portion of glass windows with these methods introduces danger in human workforce.
Recent studies include automation systems and applications of large—scale façade rotational brush.
This study proposes on the design of a switch control glass cleaning device for elevated windows. The
proposed design is based on the direction and speed of stroke and the desired rotational speed of the
circular brush through the introduction of a belt—drive linkage. The proponents will use a computer—
aided design software for the drafting and designing of the elements. Necessary analysis in terms of
motion and over-all weight of the device were distinguished. A glass section 0.5m by 0.3m was used for
evaluating the surface cleanliness based on the transparency of the window. The device can clean the
surface of a window at a rate of 0.010 m2/s. Thereby, the glass cleaning device, provides an easy,
efficient and safe solution for window cleaning in elevated windows.

Objectives
The main purpose of this study is to design and fabricate a glass cleaning device for elevated
windows. The specific objectives are the following:
1. To come up with an effective motion transmission
2. To determine specifications for prime mover motors
3. To evaluate the functionality of the device in terms of cleaning speed

Methodology
The approaches used in this project are the following:
a) Collection of the data for the desired output of cleaning.
b) Design and sizing of the elements using the AutoCAD software.
c) Weight Analysis.
d) Motion Analysis. The proponents will assign the appropriate specification of the motors
with accordance to the required load capacity.
e) Procurement of materials for the assembly of experimental design. This phase includes
test-fitting, calibration, and final assembly.
f) Capacity Evaluation in terms of surface cleanliness.
g) Results and recommendation.
