Section A

a)State the writer’s main point in no more than 30 words.

The writers focuses in the passage on the history of a rum industry in the Caribbean and
especially that of Barbados, wherte there exists the longest living rum-maker, Mt Gay.

b)Write an essay of no more than 500 words in which you:

i) establish the writer's purpose,
ii)and comment on the strategies and language techniques used.
iii)In addition, briefly evaluate the reliability of the information presented in this extract.

Verbal communication is the process of sending a message whether orally or in written form.
When we communicate we usually do so with specific aims, goals and intention. The reasons
for communicating includes wanting to persuade, inform, evaluate a situation, explain,
negotiate, express feelings, to entertain or explore an idea. Different strategies and language
techniques can help a writer or speaker to fulfill the purpose for communicating. This can be
through using emotional appeal, using examples or employing literary devices such as
repetition, rhetorical questions, hyperbole, etc. The strategies employed are mainly dependent
on the purpose to be achieved. For example, for an informative piece of writing a writer would
have to prove the reliability of his information to fulfill the purpose of relaying factual information.
Within the above passage, a written form of communication, the writer intends to inform his
readers of the rum culture in the Caribbean and specifically of the ageless “rum story” of
Barbados. He provides inormation about the Mt Gay distillery and answers questions of how the
distillery progressed throughout its existence, who it was owned by at what time, where it was
relocated to and why its name was changed. Upon reading this passage the reader would’ve
essentially learned that the Mt. Gay distillery in Barabados is over 300 years old, that it was
originally called Mt. Gilboa, had multiple owners throughout its existence one after which it was
renamed and that it was relocated from St Lucy to Bridgetown of the island.
However, the reader would not have been able to garner such information without the help of
certain startegies and language techniques utilized in the passage by the writer. Firstly, the
writer opens the passage with on a high note with a very effective attention getter which
interests the reader into continuing to read the passage. He then, appeals to the emotion of the
reader in order to create a relatable context for the reader within the following lines “Some of
us…,have become rum snobs- aghast should anything but white rum be used to make
cocktails!’. Within the same paragragh he personifies rum as a storyteller and through the use of
this language technique he foreshadows that the passage will contain a story of some sort
about rum. Which turns out to be the rum story of Barbados.
Another strategy used was to prove the reliability of the facts he shares in his essay, thus
getting the reader to take the information as truthful and factual. The author relays his facts
about the Barbados rum story from authoritative sources- historians- who a reader would trust to
know information from as long as 300 years ago. He also quotes from the legal deed of the Mt
Gay distillery, which like the historians can be taken as a reliable source.
In conclusion, the writer uses written communication to inform his readers of the ageless rum
story in Barbados and effectively makes that purpose achievable through ways such as
appealing to the reader’s emotions and using personification to keep the reader interested in the
information being imparted. He also proves the reliability throughout the passage so that the
reader can not only read the facts but also believe them.
