Lighthouse INST

This document provides assembly instructions for building a paper model of a lighthouse in 3 pages and 15 steps. It includes cutting out various pieces from pattern pages, folding tabs and panels, and gluing pieces together in a specific order to form the cliff base, tower, cottage, chimney, lamp room and roof structures. Scoring fold lines and using a black marker to darken edges are recommended to improve the appearance of the finished model lighthouse.

THE LIGHTHOUSE Assembly Instructions - Page 1.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED: Scissors, Elmer's glue (or a glue stick), a ruler or other straight-edge, a utility knife, a
black marker and something to score with (see below).

FOLDING TIP: I strongly recommend 'scoring' the fold lines before folding. This means making a small
crease or groove without tearing the paper. You can use an old ink pen, a knitting needle, the end of a paper
clip, or any similar metal object (I use a pointy little tool from a manicure kit). Scoring will help you fold much
more quickly and precisely, and makes small tabs and panels easier to deal with.

THE LIGHT HOUSE Assembly Instructions - Page 2.
BUILDING TIP: This model will look much nicer if you use a black marker to darken the white paper edges of
each piece (by laying the marker sideways on the edge or by turning the piece face down and tracing
around the edges with the marker).

ASSEMBLY: Begin by cutting out CLIFF A and CLIFF B on Parts Page 1. For each piece, fold the three gray tabs
DOWNWARD. Fold DOWNWARD between the three side panels on CLIFF A. Fold DOWNWARD between the five
side panels on CLIFF B.

CLIFF A has a tab with a yellow dot. Glue this tab to the smaller side panel on CLIFF B to form one piece, as shown in
Figure 1. Then glue the tab with a green dot to the opposite side panel, forming a piece like the one shown in Figure 2.

Cut out the CLIFF TOP on Parts Page 3. Use the utility knife to remove the white center area. Then fold the four light
gray tabs DOWNWARD and fold the six dark gray tabs UPWARD. Position the CLIFF TOP so the rounded part of the
opening is towards the highest part of the cliff. Connect the CLIFF TOP to the CLIFF by interlacing the light gray tabs
and gluing each tab to the opposite piece. The cliff should now resemble Figure 3.

Next, cut out the FOUNDATION on Parts Page 2. Use the utility knife to remove the white center area. Fold the ten
dark gray tabs UPWARD, fold the six light gray tabs DOWNWARD, and then fold all six side panels DOWNWARD.

Glue the light gray tabs to their adjacent panels and then position the FOUNDATION onto the CLIFF as shown in
Figure 4. Glue the six CLIFF tabs to the inside of the FOUNDATION.

Now cut out the TOWER on Parts Page 2. Fold the gray tab DOWNWARD and then fold DOWNWARD between all
eight side panels. Glue the gray tab to the opposite side panel. Position the TOWER onto the FOUNDATION as
shown in Figure 5. The tower sides with single windows should face the front (high side) of the cliff, and the back (low
side) of the cliff. Glue the seven FOUNDATION tabs with yellow dots to the inside of the TOWER.

Cut out the COTTAGE on Parts Page 3. Fold all six tabs DOWNWARD, fold both roof panels DOWNWARD, fold the
small triangular panel attached to the roof panel DOWNWARD, and then fold DOWNWARD between all five side
panels.

Glue the tab with a green tab to the adjacent roof panel. Glue the four tabs with yellow dots and the tab with a red dot
to the roof panels, forming a cottage as shown in Figure 6. Place the COTTAGE onto the FOUNDATION as shown in
Figure 7. Glue the three FOUNDATION tabs with green dots to the inside of the COTTAGE.

Cut out the CHIMNEY on Parts Page 3. (Scoring the fold lines is particularly helpful for small parts like this). Darken
the unprinted side of this piece with the black marker and let the ink dry. Then Fold the two lower panels UPWARD,
fold the gray tab DOWNWARD, and fold DOWNWARD between all four side panels. Glue the gray tab to the opposite
side panel. Position the CHIMNEY onto the cottage roof as shown in Figure 8 and glue the two lower CHIMNEY
panels to the roof.

Next, cut out the TOWER TOP on Parts Page 2. Fold the eight lower panels (the smaller rectangular panels)
UPWARD, fold all eight upper panels DOWNWARD, fold the gray tab DOWNWARD and then fold DOWNWARD
between all eight upper panels.

Glue the gray tab to the opposite upper panel. Place the TOWER TOP onto the tower as shown in Figure 9, and glue
the TOWER TOP's lower eight panels directly over the dark gray areas with green dots on the TOWER.

Fold a nicer looking model, you may want to use the black marker to darken inside the vertical folds in the TOWER
TOP's upper panels, as shown in Figure 10. This will help prevent any white paper from showing after we add the
TOP LINER.

(Continued on next page...)

THE LIGHT HOUSE Assembly Instructions - Page 3.
Cut out the TOP LINER on Parts Page 2. Fold all eight outer panels UPWARD. Position the TOP LINER inside the
TOWER TOP as shown in Figure 11. Glue the eight outer TOP LINER panels to the inside of the TOWER TOP. Trim
as needed (by cutting away any white paper or by darkening with the black marker).

Now it's time to make a decision... you need to choose which lamp you want to add to your lighthouse. Your options
include a normal yellowish light, an ominous green light, a menacing red light, or a darkened lamp room (with or
without broken glass). Cut out whichever LAMP ROOM you like best on Parts Page 3.

Fold the eight lower panels UPWARD. Fold the eight triangular gray tabs DOWNWARD and then straighten them back
out. Fold the gray tab with a green dot DOWNWARD and then fold DOWNWARD between the eight side panels.

Glue the gray tab with the green dot to the opposite side panel. The piece should now resemble Figure 12. Place the
LAMP ROOM over the black area in the center of the TOP LINER and glue the LAMP ROOM's lower panels to the
floor of the TOP LINER as shown in Figure 13.

Cut out the TOP ROOF on Parts Page 3. Fold the gray tab DOWNWARD and then fold DOWNWARD between all
eight side panels. Flip the piece over and use the black marker to darken the unprinted side of each panel about half
way up, as shown in Figure 14. After the ink dries, glue the gray tab to the opposite panel to form a shallow cone.

Place plenty of glue on the LAMP ROOM's triangular tabs and then place the TOP ROOF over the LAMP ROOM as
shown in Figure 15. Check from all sides to be sure the TOP ROOF is sitting level, and hold in position until the glue
dries a little.

And that's everything. You now own a haunted lighthouse!
