CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

We all know that Philippines does not have enough Psychiatrists and mental

health workers. Due to lack of psychiatrists, we also lack of mental health awareness.

This case is very alarming and might worsen overtime. According to World Health

Organization (WHO), more than 100 million people suffer from mental health disorders

in the Western Pacific Region, including Philippines wherein records show a high

number of cases among youth. The record also shows that Philippines has the highest

number of depressed people in Southeast Asia.

All people are going or been through stress, problems, and sadness. But not all of

them are resolved, these simple factors can lead to depression. We know that depression

is a serious illness, one depressed person can be suicidal or may harm others. Only

professionals can advise them, but friends, family, and peers may take role during the

process. The researcher aims to know the perceptions regarding depression and what do

they know about depression. The goal of this study is understand and also analyze the

people’s perceptions. This research may contribute in helping the people to have mental

health awareness. In this study, the researcher will select students of Grade 12 HUMSS in

Pablo Roman National High School and ask their perception on depression and social

anxiety. With that step, we can help others be aware and alert. It is not about the simple

sadness and anxiety. Depression is an illness we need to give attention and focus.
Depression has many subtopics and research, but the perceptions of students is

what the researchers are curious about, so they want to conduct this study. We aim to

make you interested as well as gain knowledge that you can use in daily life. Makes you

aware of this problem and someday help in pursuing to find solution.


Statement of the Problem

The general statement of the problem is: What are the Senior High School

Student’s Perceptions on people with depression and social anxiety?

Specifically, the present study sought answers to the following questions:

1. How may the profiles of Senior High School Students be described in terms of:

1.1 strand,

1.2 age; and

1.3 gender?

2. What are the Senior High School Student’s perceptions on depression and social

anxiety?

3.How can mental health awareness in Senior High School Students be effective?

4. How will this study will contribute in helping the implementation of mental health

awareness?
Scope and Delimitation

The main purpose of this study is to know the perceptions of Senior High School

Students of Pablo Roman regarding depression and social anxiety. This study shall

benefit the students that has depression and social anxiety, their family of parent, and the

mental health workers. The respondents of the study are Senior High School students of

Pablo Roman National High School, they could be male or female regardless of strand

and age. The research will be conducted during the 2nd Quarter of the First Semester

2019.

The total population of 5 Senior High School students who answered the

documented interview. The respondents were selected using random sampling technique.

The data are analyzed and summarized. The researcher used qualitative methodology.
