Batch 1 – Assignment 1

Q1. Find the probability that in a group of n people, at least two share the same birthday. In particular,
if n = 3, what is the probability?
Q2 In a city, three English dailies A, B, and C are published, and a recent survey of readers indicates
the following: 30% read A, 20% read B, 15% read C, 10% read both A and B, 8% read both B and
C, 4% read both A and C. Further, the probability that at least one of the three newspapers is read
by 45%. Find the probability of all three papers A, B, and C.
Q3 A bin contains three different types of disposable flashlights. The probability that type 1 flashlight
will give over 100 hours of use is 0.7. The corresponding probabilities for type 2 and type 3
flashlights are respectively 0.4 and 0.3. Suppose that 20% of flashlights in the bin are type 1, 30%
are type 2 and 50% are type 3.
(a) Find the probability that a randomly selected flashlight will give more than 100 hours of
use.
(b) Given the flashlight lasted over 100 hours, what is the probability that it was a type j
flashlight, j = 1, 2, 3
Q4 The probability mass function of a discrete random variable X is given by

X : 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

P(X=x) : 0 0.1 0.2 0.2 0.3 0.01 0.02 0.17

Find
(a) P(1.5 < X < 4.5 X > 2)
(b) The smallest value of  for which P(X  ) > 0.5

Q5 In the following joint probability mass function

Y
X
0 1 2 3
0 k 0.25 0.125 0
1 0 0.125 0.125 2k
(a) Find the value of k
(b) Find the marginal probability mass function of X and Y
(c) Find P(X = 1 Y = 1)
