SOP for Forced Draught Fan (FD Fan)

1 PURPOSE
This procedure is intended to provide guidance and instructions for carrying out
start up and shut down of FD fan A & B during plant start-up .

2 Scope
This procedure is applicable to FD fan A & B located at boiler area of 3x660MW.

3 Input
Air, Power

4 Output
Secondary Air to Furnace

5 Responsibility
Boiler Field Engineer, Boiler Desk Engineer, Shift In-charge

6 System Description
The function of FD fan is to supply secondary air to furnace for efficient coal / oil
combustion in furnace. There are 2 FD fans (2x60% capacity). The fan is of axial
flow type and having blade pitch control system for air flow regulation. Blade
pitch is controlled by high pressure oil. Oil skid contains 2 HP pumps. Oil cooler
&filter are located in the return path of blade pitch control. There is provision of
SCAPH to improve the air temp of APH inlet during cold start-up and to minimise
chance of cold end corrosion. Fan bearings are cooled by bath oil cooling
system. Motor has anti friction bearings.

10.2 Taking first fan in service:

10.2.1. Start one oil pump. Observe discharge pressure. Ensure its
healthiness and keep second pump in interlock.
10.2.2. Check all start up permissive are satisfied.
10.2.3. Start FD fan & monitor the starting current & no load current.
10.2.4. Fan discharge damper opens in Auto.
10.2.5. Observe for abnormal sound, Vibration, Bearing temperature,
Winding temperature
10.2.6. Increase air flow gradually to required target keeping furnace
draft in range of (50-100 Pa).
10.2.7. Single Stream FD fan Operation Can be done at Part Load.

10.3 Taking second fan in service:

10.3.1 Follow the steps 10.2.1 to 10.2.5mentioned in 1" fan start-up.
10.3.2 Ensure communication damper between discharges ducts of
FD closed giving start command to second FD fan.
10.3.3 Open blade pitch of fan and decrease blade pitch of running
fan to keep the air draft in range of (-50 to -100 Pa) & excess
secondary air in permissible range.

10.3.4 Make blade pitch of both fan equal by parallel operation. After
getting desired condition of furnace draft & excess air. Put both
fan pitch control in auto and put master in AUTO.
10.3.5 If there is any considerable deviation between loadings of both
fans, give between pitch controls of fans to keep the fan's
current almost equal.

11 Shutdown Procedure
11.1. Take two mills out of service from five mill operation and keep the boiler
on operation by ensuring flame stability. Reduce the boiler load to 50%.
11.2. Take secondary air master control in manual.
11.3. Reduce gradually blade pitch of FD fan which is to be stopped and
increase blade pitch of other FD fan which is to be kept in service.
While executing this step watch on secondary air flow, secondary air
box inlet pressure, furnace to secondary air box differential pressure fan
header pressure and furnace draft and flame stability.
11.4. Reduce blade pitch to minimum gradually.
11.5. Check the current and vibration of running fan and get ensure for its
stability.
11.6. Stop the fan.
11.7. Ensure discharge damper closes in auto.
11.8. Stop oil pump after 2 hrs. After stopping fan if no reverse rotation is
observed

12 Isolation Procedure with check list

12.1 Press local emergency push button of fan.
12.2 Switch off control supply of breaker.
12.3 Rack out I I kV power supply of Fan breaker from switch gear.
12.4 Isolate 115v supply of lube oil system
12.5 Switch off power supply of Discharge damper of fan
12.6 Check fan is stationary, otherwise provide stopper to fan shaft.
12.7 Closed fan discharge damper and check for passing of damper,
12.8 Close HP oil isolation valve.
