Data Storage Module Upgrade Procedure 1. Introduction

1. Introduction

Caution:
Do not use this procedure unless the TITAN 5500/5500S system is currently
using FP8.0.x or higher.

1.01 This Technical Manual, 76.5500/43, Rev A5, contains the procedure for
upgrading the 81.5502C (referred to from here on as 5502C) Data Storage Module
(DSM) to the 81.5502D DSM.
1.02 Beginning with FP8.0, you can now replace a DSM by using two different
methods. The first method, the traditional method, uses Utility Mode, or the new
method, using a single TL1 command. However, you can only replace a DSM using
the new TL1command method if the system is in a normal state; meaning both ACs
are normal (NR).
1.03 At a minimum, the person performing the DSM upgrade should have
completed the Tellabs 5500/5500S Fundamentals and Asynchronous Interfaces
Course.
1.04 If any part of this procedure cannot be performed, or if the upgrade is
unsuccessful, follow company procedures or contact Tellabs Customer Services at
1.800.443.5555 to obtain technical assistance.
1.05 Estimated times are also provided for individual commands that require
more than two minutes to complete. The time required to complete a given
command varies according to system size and the nature of the command.
1.06 During the copy process, the system assigns a time stamp to the newly
copied memory. If the copy was successful, this stamp shows a time between
when the CPY-MEM command was entered and when it was completed.

Minimum Revision Levels 1.07 Verify that the revision level of each hardware module in the system meets
or exceeds the current software minimums. Refer to Minimum Revision Levels for
Modules in the Software Release Document, 76.5500/16.
1.08 Check the current software load in step 5, page 43-23. If there are any
doubts about which FP load is on the system, contact the System Administrator or
Tellabs Customer Services at 1.800.443.5555.

Note: Customer Service representatives are available 24 hours a day.

Data Storage Module Upgrade Procedure 1. Introduction

TL1 Command Language 1.19 This manual assumes that the installer has some familiarity with the TL1
Command Language used by the Tellabs 5500/5500S system. The Tellabs
5500/5500S Command Reference Manual, 76.5500/13, provides a thorough
introduction to command syntax, system responses, and error codes for individual
commands.
1.20 When entering the commands suggested in this manual, refer to the
Tellabs 5500/5500S Command Reference, 76.5500/13, for proper TL1 command
syntax, proper system responses and an interpretation of error messages. Take a
moment to review these features of TL1 commands:
• TL1 commands are not case-sensitive. The system does not
distinguish between capital and lowercase letters. (Utility mode
passwords are not part of TL1—they are case sensitive.)

• A semicolon (;), not the RETURN (or Enter) key, is always used as the
final character that executes the command.

• The semicolon (;) also serves as a prompt, which appears at the end
of the command to indicate the system is ready for the next command.

• M ctag COMPLD is the normal system response to a correctly entered

command. The “M ctag COMPLD” does not always appear at the end
of the system response. It may appear in the midst of the response
displayed on the screen or printed.
• M ctag RTRV is the normal response to a RTRV command that
retrieves a range of equipment addresses.

• The system displays the system ID, date, and time stamp with the
COMPLD/RTRV line.

• If a DENY message appears in response to a command, verify its

syntax and execute the command again. If the response is still
incorrect, follow company procedures or contact Tellabs Customer
Services at 1.800.443.5555 to obtain technical assistance.

1. Introduction Data Storage Module Upgrade Procedure

Pre-upgrading Checklist
1.21 This section provides a checklist and prepares the TITAN TITAN 5xxx
System for the hardware upgrade.
__ 1. Obtain and install static-preventive wriststrap in the jack located at the
top of bay or follow site-specific antistatic procedures.

Warning:
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) may damage sensitive electronic components
resulting in a traffic-affecting condition. Ensure that plug-in modules are stored
in static preventive material. Do not touch any components on the modules.
Handle modules by the edges or face plate. Always wear a properly grounded
wrist strap when handling, removing, or inserting a module and when touching
the equipment shelves or cables. ESD protective flooring, used with proper ESD
footwear, may be used as an alternative to a wrist strap. ESD wrist straps and
footwear should be checked daily to verify performance.

__ 2. Obtain proper security clearance to:

- access utility mode
- perform this procedure.
__ 3. Obtain antistatic protective bags for storage of hardware modules. The
bags must be large enough to store DSM modules.

Danger:
Inside some front covers are copper tabs that form an EMI gasket. If handled
roughly these tabs can cut your fingers. Handle them with care.

__ 4. Starting from the top and working down, remove all front covers from
administrative complex racks so that fault LEDs can be monitored and
modules can be removed or inserted.
__ 5. One PC capable of creating log files and VT100 terminal emulation
with necessary RS232/422 data communication cables. To order an
RS232/422 cable for use with a PC or VT100-type terminal, use
Tellabs Part No. 50.80xx, where xx = length in feet of the cable, up to
a maximum of 50 feet.
Proper configuration of terminal links is covered in steps 1 through 9,
beginning on page 43-16.

Note: One terminal or PC with VT100 emulation is required. If only one terminal
is available, physically reconnect it at each link. Because two links are
used in this procedure, two terminals are highly recommended.

__ 6. Verify the lamps on the Alarm Interface Panel turn on by pressing and
holding the lamp test button. Replace any failed bulbs.

Page 43-8 2/05 76.5500/43, Rev A5

Data Storage Module Upgrade Procedure 2. Preparing the System

2. Preparing the System

Introduction
2.01 This procedure establishes communication using links 1 and 5 in order to
prepare the TITAN 5500/S system for the hardware upgrade. This section
activates the System Integrity Reports (SIRPT) and turns off the Message Log Port
(MLP).

Note: If at any point during this procedure the system responds with DENY, the
previous command may have been entered incorrectly. Re-enter the
previous command. If the command was entered correctly and DENY
remains, follow company procedures for obtaining technical assistance, or
call Tellabs Customer Services at 1.800.443.5555.

2.02 In this part of the procedure, two terminals are used for communication to
the administrative complex. Link 1 is connected to AC-A, and link 5 is connected to
AC-B.
2.03 If only one terminal is available, the terminal has to be reconnected to the
appropriate link each time a switch from one AC to the other is required. In this
manual, the phrase From link x (where x = 1 or 5) means enter the command from
the terminal attached to link x.

76.5500/43, Rev A5 2/05 Page 43-9

2. Preparing the System Data Storage Module Upgrade Procedure

Verifying User Privilege Code

Note 1: In order to perform the following procedure, your User Privilege Code
(UPC) must be at least an A8 or higher.

Note 2: When replacing the Data Storage Module (DSM) using the TL1
Command, it is necessary for the alpha and numerical character of your
UPC to either match or be higher than the Command Option Privilege
Code (COPC) in order to invoke the CRTE-EQPT::HDD command. The
Channel Privilege Code (CAPC) must also match the UPC or be higher.
For example, if your UPC is an A8, than the COPC must also be an A8
or lower. Only the CAPC can either match your UPC or be higher.
Perform the following steps to verify that these settings are correct.

__ 1. From Link 1, log onto the Tellabs 5500/5500S system by entering the
following command:
ACT-USER::uid:ctag::pid;

Where: uid = user id or upgrade user ID

ctag = correlation tag (usually user initials)
pid = password from system administrator

System response:
system_id yy-mm-dd hh:mn:ss
M ctag COMPLD
/* NOTICE: This is a private computer system. */
/* Unauthorized access or use may lead to
prosecution. *

Where: yy = current year, “00” = 2000

mm = month, 1-12
dd = day, 1-31
hh = hour of 24-hour clock, 0-23
mn = minute, 0-59
ss = seconds, 0-59.
__ 2. Retrieve your user privilege code (UPC) by entering the following
command:
RTRV-SECU-USER::uid:ctag;

Where: uid = your user id or upgrade user ID

System response:
M ctag COMPLD
“Bob:,UPC=A8::CHAN=1-1,PAGE=0,PCNT=0”

__ 2.1 Write down your UPC __________.

__ 2.2 Verify from the system response that your UPC is an A8

or higher in order to perform this procedure.

__ 2.3 If your UPC is not an A8 or higher, contact the system

administrator to have your UPC changed before
continuing with this procedure.

Getting Started

Caution:
Do not perform this procedure unless the TITAN 5500/S system is currently
using FP8.0.x or higher.

3.01 Tellabs recommends using the TL1 command method for replacing the
DSM. The following procedure only replaces one DSM at a time. If you need to
replace both DSMs, you will need to follow this procedure twice. Once for each
DSM that is being replaced.
3.02 Depending on which method you want to use to replace the DSM, choose
one of the following:
__ 1. To replace a DSM using the TL1 command method, go to DSM
Replacement Using the TL1 Command Method, page 43-27.
__ 2. To replace a DSM using the UM method, go to DSM Replacement
Using Utility Mode (UM), page 43-45.
