Recovery
Assigned by: Sir Inam Supro
What is Recovery?
In computing, data recovery is a process of retrieving inaccessible, lost, corrupted, damaged or
formatted data from secondary storage, removable media or files, when the data stored in
them cannot be accessed in a normal way. The data is most often salvaged from storage media
such as internal or external hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), USB flash drives,
magnetic tapes, CDs, DVDs, RAID subsystems, and other electronic devices.

Recovery may be required due to physical damage to the storage devices or logical damage to
the file system that prevents it from being mounted by the host operating system (OS).

What Causes Data Loss?

• Hardware avid System problems

• Software corruption or application error

• Virus Attacks

• Human Error — Accidental deletion. — Accidental overwriting of Files

• Natural Disaster

Objective of Data Recover:

Using some kind of data recovery software can be for many Objectives. First of all, the data loss
can be a grave issue for those who always save official and business records in hard drive of
computers. If by chance they come to know that files or whole partitions have been deleted
accidentally, then definitely this news will shock them.
Purpose of Data Recovery

Maintaining the integrity of data: Following an error, a region must restore the data to a
consistent known state with a minimal loss of updated data.

Minimizing the effects of errors on end users: Where possible, an error that affects only one
end user, one application, or one database must not cause the whole region to terminate.
Furthermore, if processing for one end user is forced to stop prematurely, the region must be
able to back out current database updates that were performed by that end user.

Restoring services as quickly as possible: If processing for the whole region terminates, many
end users can have their updating work interrupted. On a subsequent region startup, the region
must back out only those transaction updates that were in process (in-flight) at the time of the
error. This makes restart quicker, and reduces the amount of data that the end user must
reenter.
Techniques of Data Recovery

1.Logical Data Recovery

When an error is not a problem related to the hardware and can be solved with the help of
software solutions, it is referred to as ‘Logical Data Recovery’. Logical damage to the hard drive
causes corruption and makes the drive & data inaccessible. In such cases, you need to perform
logical data recovery.

Damaged, Formatted or Deleted Partition

Cases where hard disk becomes unreadable is usually caused by a damage to the partition table
and file system due to bad sectors that develop (slowly) during a hard drive usage. When a hard
drive goes bad or data gets deleted, it’s better to take out the hard disk from the system and
connect it to another system in read-only mode (if possible). The same goes for other storage
devices such as thumb drives, SD cards, etc. Stop using the storage media immediately to avoid
permanent data loss.

Overwritten Data
When a file is deleted from the Windows operating system, the deleted files are considered as
free space by the system. So when you install a program or copy a file to your system, it
overwrites the lost files and makes recovery impossible. Therefore, when you face a data loss
situation stop using your system or hard drive to prevent further damage to the lost or deleted
data.
Example of Data Recovery Using Software
Recovery Situations:

• Only restore data that is mot overwritten.

• Do not work or physically damaged drives.

• Uses various File system such as FAT,NTFS to recover data

• Car be used to restore permanently deleted Files, from removable devices etc..

Recuva
Recuva is a data recovery program for windows. It
is site to recover files that have beer
"permanently" deleted. The program can also be
used to recover files deleted from US13 flask
drives, memory cards etc.

• The program works or both FAT art NTFS file systems.

2. Physical Data Recovery

 Human errors are the second most

common cause of data loss after
hardware failures that can cause
physical damage to a storage
media such as hard disk. A hard
disk is quite fragile and compact. A
little shock can result in a non-
functioning hard drive and a
permanent data loss situation. Therefore, it’s important that you handle your hard drive
with the utmost care.

Two Methods Used for Physical Data Recovery.

Macroscopic Technique

• Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM)

• Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM)

What is Scanning Probe Microscopy?

Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) is a branch of

microscopy that Forms images of surfaces using a
physical probe that scans the specimen..

• An image of the surface is obtained by mechanically

moving the probe in a raster scan of the specimen, line by
line, and recording the probe-surface interaction as a
Function of position

• It Uses a sharp magnetic tip attached to a flexible

cantilever placed close to the surface to be analyzed

• produce a topographic view of the surface, using a PC as a Controller.

Magnetic Force Microscopy:
• MFM (Magnetic Force Microscopy) is view technique which images the spatial
variation of. magnetic forces on a sample surface.

• MFM is derived From scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and uses a sharp magnetic
tip attacked to a Flexible cantilever for analyst's. • An image of the field at the surface is
formed by moving the tip across the surface and measuring the force.
