The document provides information about Hosanna Processional, a Palm Sunday anthem that employs a canon structure. It can be performed by various vocal combinations and includes an optional hand drum part.

A canon is a musical composition that employs a leader melody followed by one or more imitating melodies. The round is an early example of canon form.

Hosanna Processional is structured as two statements of a 'Hosanna' canon with an interlude of 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,' followed by a slight alteration of the canon melody to allow the parts to finish together.

Hosanna Processional is a flexible canon for any combination of 2-part or 3-part treble
or mixed voices. Optional hand drum accompaniment makes this the ideal Palm Sunday
procession anthem for adults and children alike. Suggested corresponding scripture
references include Psalm 118, Matthew 21: 1-11, Mark 11: 1-10 and Luke 19: 28-40.

The word canon is taken from the Greek work kanon, which means rule or law. Musically
speaking, a canon is a composition that employs a leader melody and one or more follower
melodies (which imitate the leader). The earliest example of this is the round, which
began in England in the 13 th century and was further developed by the Italians during the
th
14 century as the caccia (which means "chase").

Our canon is actually two statements of the "Hosanna" canon with a break in the middle
for "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord," and then a slight alteration of the
canon melody at the end so that each of the parts can finish together.

The hand drum part may be improvised, or the following pattern may be played and
repeated, ad libitum.
