Final exam of Structural Behavior and Analysis

Question (1):
A- What are shell structures, illustrate the main advantages and disadvantages of these
structures?

B- Define folded plate structures and state the advantages and disadvantages of these
structures?

C- What is the difference between Arche and Cable Structures?

D- What is the benefit of ties in columns?

Question (2):
Design a circular column to support an axil dead load of 1200 kn and an axial live load of
2000 kn. Assume the initial percentage of longitudinal reinforcement is 3%; given the
compressive strength of concrete 𝑓𝑐′ = 35 Mpa and 𝑓𝑦 = 420 Mpa.
Use the following equations to design the column:
Pu = 1.2 D.L + 1.6 L.L
∅𝑃𝑛 = ∅ 0.85[0.85 𝑓𝑐′ (𝐴𝑔 − 𝐴𝑠𝑡 ) + 𝑓𝑦 . 𝐴𝑠𝑡 ]
𝐴𝑠𝑡
𝜌𝑠𝑡 =
𝐴𝑔
𝐴𝑔 𝑓𝑐′
𝜌𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑎𝑙 = 0.45 ( − 1) ( )
𝐴𝑐 𝑓𝑦
𝜋 𝐷𝐶2
𝐴𝑐 =
4
𝐷𝑐 = (D − 2(concrete cover + spiral diameter))
4 𝐴𝑠𝑝
𝜌𝑠 =
𝐷𝑐 .𝑆

ϕ 10 mm for spirals with 𝐴𝑠𝑝 = 71 𝑚𝑚2

ϕ 22 mm with an area = 387 mm2 for longitudinal reinforcement.
