The Association of Caribbean States (ACS) was formed in 1994 to enhance cooperation among countries in the Caribbean region. The Association of Caribbean States:

 1994 – present
 Was formed in 1994 and there was no dissolution.
 Formed to enhance cooperation within the greater Caribbean
 The greater Caribbean is a political concept created by the ACS most inclusive of those that
define the zone bordering the Caribbean sea
 Emphasis is placed on the common historical, social and cultural characteristics of its members.
 Geographically it links the Antilles and numerous countries, whose territories are not entirely
Caribbean, but who share them with zones e.g. Central America, north America and other areas
of south America
 Member states of ACS: 39 member states
 Dominican Republic, Columbia, costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, panama,
Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela
 Associate Member states- Aruba, BVI, curacao, Guadeloupe, parts of the Netherlands including
Saba and St. Marteen

Concerns of the ACS:

 Preserve the environmental integrity of the Caribbean sea with the promotion of sustainable
development
 Sustainable tourism
 Establish strategies for dealing with natural disasters on a long term basis
 Improvement of transport links

Two areas of Action:

 Facilitating language training


 Strengthening of disaster agencies
