INTRODUCTION:
Interpretation is analyzing what and how things have been done in the past.
Interpretation of natural and cultural heritage has been done in many
cultures and locations for thousands of years. The storytellers and elders of
elders of the natives passed on the oral history of their people through the
generations. The oral tradition assured the survival and evolution of cultures
long before books or electronic media emerged.

Today, interpretation is a communication tool designed to improve

understanding at venues such as museums, nature centres, historic site,
aquatic centre, on tours, etc.

The definition provide by the National Association for Interpretation is:

‘Interpretation is a communication process that forges emotional and
intellectual connection between the interests of the audience and the
inherent meanings to the resource.’

Located on the west coast of India, Goa is internationally renowned for its
beaches and mesmerizing sunsets; reason enough for the thousands of
tourists that gather here every year mainly from European continent.

While these relaxation activities to the casual visitor may seem all that is it to
Goa, a little unveiling of the beauty reveals this tiny state to be unlike any
other in India, for reasons that have everything to do with its history and
culture- present- day Goa owes its character to the fusion of Hindu and
Portuguese influences. Drawn – to what was then known as the Indies – in
search of “Christians and spices” – the Portuguese went on to set up a colony
in Goa; the four and a half centuries of Portuguese rule that followed, leaving
an indelible stamp on the people and culture. During the imposition of the
Inquisition, many of the local residents were converted to Christianity; those
who chose to cling to their earlier beliefs being forced to flee further inland,
laying thereby the foundations of the spectacular ancient temples to be
found in the hinterland.

Tourism in Goa is already booming making it a destination of jetsetters of the

world. The Heritage Interpretive Centre aims at preserving the rich culture of
Goa not through its superficiality but through its very essence – the living
tradition of its people. The Heritage Interpretive Centre will be a celebration
of culture through art, architecture and craft of Goa. Rather than just transmit
information, the Heritage Interpretive Centre are intended to be dynamic
and interactive, and elicit enthusiasm for the subject matter.
The key purpose of the Heritage Interpretive Centre is to provide a means of
telling a story, and transmitting history and culture. The Heritage Interpretive
Centre also consists of hostels to let the tourist stay an experience the culture
of Goa live.

“I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realizes an
emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don't have complete
emotions about the present, only about the past.”
― Virginia Woolf

NEED FOR STUDY:

Goa has this inheritance which can be seen in the ever changing and highly
developed cultural traditions of modern India. An establishment dedicated
to a study and display of Goan heritage is long overdue.

The Heritage Interpretive Centre at Goa will explore the ancient culture of
Goa and its layer through the heritage of India and tracing its modern
relevance and continuing legacy. It will have its focus both on the
preservation and promotion of the culture of Goa. People all over the world
will generate communication to its history through scholarships, education,
museum displays, films, craft demonstrations and live encounters.
Aim:
The Heritage Interpretive Centre aims to be a unique centre for the living
traditions of art, folk, performing arts, craft and architecture of Goa thereby
evolving to be a one stop destination for students, national and foreign
visitors to get acquainted with the actual fabric of Goa and Goan Heritage.

Objectives:
• To understand and analyze the history and architecture of Old Goa, its
dynamics of growth in context to rest of Goa.

• To establish historic, cultural and architectural values and their

importance in Goa.

• To understand and analyze the existing framework for the institution

and propose a design for the same.

• To study and develop the design aspects by referring to other such

spaces.

• To research on creating awareness and administration of the

traditional Indian arts and crafts in the public.

collecting information about their meanings, requirements and qualities. By
reading about the existing centre around the world and cultural movements
of Goa as well as other places it will help in broadening the perspective and
knowing about the possibilities in this area. The research will thereby help in
synthesizing the concept of design for the project.
