Tutorial Chapter 3-1

This document discusses the design of mechanical joints and keys. It provides example problems and solutions for determining the required length of a parallel key given shaft dimensions and material properties. It also details how to design a keyway for a motor shaft extension and calculates the shear strength of the key against the shaft. Finally, it presents examples of welded joint design, calculating joint strength and efficiency for steel plates joined with different weld sizes and materials.

Tutorial Chapter 3: Design of Mechanical Joint

1. A 45 mm diameter shaft is made of steel with a yield strength of 400 MPa. A parallel key of size 14
mm width and 9 mm thickness made of steel with a yield strength of 340 MPa is to be used. Find the
required length of key, if the shaft is loaded to transmit the maximum permissible torque. Use maximum
shear stress theory and assume a factor of safety of 2. Answer: 105 mm

2. A 15 kW, 960 rpm motor has a mild steel shaft of 40 mm diameter and the extension being 75 mm.
The permissible shear and crushing stresses for the mild steel key are 56 MPa and 112 MPa respectively.
Design the keyway in the motor shaft extension. Check the shear strength of the key against the normal
strength of the shaft. Answer: 1.47

3. Design the rectangular key for a shaft of 50 mm diameter. The shearing and crushing stresses for the
key material are 42 MPa and 70 MPa Answer: 142 mm

4. Two 3/8 in. thick, 6 in wide plates made of A36 steel are welded as shown as in Figure 1. Select the
maximum size weld and using an E70 electrode (can support a load of 4.63 kips/in), determine the joint
report the result in kips. Also calculate the efficiency of the joint.

Answer: 48.6 kips , 114%

5. Two 3/8 in. thick, 6 in wide plates made of A992 high-strength steel is welded as shown as in Figure 2
is welded to a ½ in. thick, 8in wide plate using a 3/16 in. weld with an E90 electrode (tensile strength: 90
ksi, allowable strength: 30 ksi). Determine the joint strength, reporting the result in kips. Also calculate
the efficiency of the joint.

Answer: 57.2 kips , 15%
